This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.
The Role
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Senior Fast Particle Modeller, you will play a pivotal role in planning, coordinating and performing work on the modelling of fast particle behaviour in tokamak plasmas, focusing in particular on:
- Fast particle drive of plasma instabilities
- Non-classical transport of fast ions due to MHD and fast particle-driven instabilities
- Redistribution and losses of fast particles due to prompt orbit effects and externally imposed three-dimensional magnetic field perturbations
- Effects of fast particle-driven instabilities on bulk plasma transport
- Effects of fast particles on plasma turbulence
Additional Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the development of codes describing the interaction of fast particles (in particular fusion alpha-particles and injected beam ions) with tokamak plasmas
• Where possible, validate fast particle models experimentally on MAST-U
• Contribute to and help to formulate the research programmes on STEP, MAST-U and other tokamaks supported by EUROfusion, implementing research strategy in these areas
• Report results at science and other regular progress meetings
Essential Requirements:
• A PhD in plasma physics or equivalent experience.
• Proficiency with programming languages, e.g. FORTRAN, C, IDL, Python, Matlab.
• Proven experience of exploiting kinetic tokamak plasma simulation codes.
• Proven ability to conduct independent research.
• The post-holder must be a good team-player with an outward facing work-ethos as they will work closely with scientists around the world.
• Good oral presentation and written communications skills
