Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a

Senior Electronics Engineer

Devens, United States
Full-Time
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

The Senior Electronics Engineer will be responsible for the design, sourcing, implementation, testing, installation, and commissioning of custom electronics required for various I&C systems throughout the SPARC tokamak and plant. This individual will translate requirements from Instrumentation, Diagnostics, and Controls Engineers into practical, reliable electronic designs and assemblies which interface both with field and infrastructure hardware. This individual will own their designs from concept development, through detailed design and simulation, generating fabrication and assembly files – or contracting out design deliverables as necessary – and will support installation and commissioning of their hardware in the field either directly or by generating documentation packages.

This team member will:

  • Design high-power power convertor electronics for SPARC tokamak magnets and RF heating system
  • Design high-density signal routing electronics for in-tokamak and external plant control system applications
  • Collaborate with instrumentation and control engineers for and other key stakeholders to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented according to requirements
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation, testing, installation and commissioning of custom I&C electronics according to the project schedule
  • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems of I&C electronics
  • Produce engineering deliverables such as circuit diagrams, schematics, PCB layout and routing, electronics assembly files
  • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
  • Maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems
  • Report on and be accountable for progress to the head of I&C and the engineer responsible for the systems for which the I&C is being produced

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Electrical Engineering
  • Direct experience in the design and procurement of custom electronic assemblies from concept to completion
  • Direct experience generating electrical schematics and analyzing circuit performance
  • Proficiency integrating and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits
  • Proficiency with EDA software, including schematic capture and PCB layout and routing, particularly Altium
  • Proficiency with circuit simulation software, e.g. SPICE or equivalent

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience in the design of high-power power supplies (100+ A)
  • Experience in the design of RF electronics up to 200 MHz
  • Experience in the design and procurement of custom electronic assemblies from concept to completion under a QA program
  • Experience with the design of low-power supplies and precision analog electronics
  • Experience designing electronics in support of various on-board and off-board communication protocols, such as Ethernet, RS422, SPI, I2C, CAN
  • Understanding of the development of custom embedded systems, including controller / processor selection and firmware development
  • Experience designing high-reliability electronics in an industrial setting
  • Electronics design for extreme environments, including cryogenic temperature and ionizing radiation
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment.
