Senior Editor, Computing

The Reviews team at Business Insider is dedicated to producing fair and balanced buying guides, reviews, and explainers that empower our readers to make informed purchasing decisions. We are looking to hire an experienced Senior Editor for our computing vertical to expand our coverage of laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, peripherals, software, and related computing topics.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

This role would report directly to our Deputy Tech Editor and would manage a team of freelancers to develop and maintain a library of evergreen buying guides, reviews, and reference articles. The senior editor’s main duties include setting testing methodologies, assigning new buying guides and reviews, identifying significant launches worth covering, and working closely with our deputy and lead analyst to develop quarterly publishing plans. The senior editor would also collaborate with other team members on shared responsibilities, such as deals coverage.

We are looking for an editor with excellent writing and editing skills, as well as a knack for explaining technical terms to a general audience. They will have extremely strong SEO skills and an understanding of building authority for the vertical. They will have extensive, unbiased knowledge of the computing space (laptops, desktops, accessories, etc.) that includes writing naturally with authority and staying on top of what’s new. They will have a strong instinct for how to elevate our stories and voice to meet the needs of the Business Insider reader. We especially welcome editors passionate about tech reporting that’s fair but aren’t afraid to tell readers when products fall short.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintaining BI’s core computing reviews coverage, including monthly and quarterly updates of buying guides, product reviews, reference articles, etc.

  • Developing new stories, which includes assigning, editing, and writing.

  • Working in a CMS and implementing SEO best practices to develop engaging headlines. Knowledge of photo editing is a plus.

  • Recruiting and managing freelance writers, including providing feedback and guidance during the writing process.

  • Contributing to major deals coverage (Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc.).

  • Developing, maintaining, and refining methodologies for product reviews and buying guides, including research and testing. The editor will enforce guidelines while tracking consistency.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience in the tech reviews space
  • Meticulous editing skills and can provide clear, actionable feedback whenever changes are needed while maintaining our style and voice
  • A strong understanding of SEO best practices and experience in using analytics tools
  • Fact-checking abilities
  • A critical eye for recognizing erroneous, misleading, or outdated information
  • The ability to clearly translate complex and technical language into easy-to-digest, conversational stories in the Business Insider voice
  • A strong list of reliable freelancers
  • Contacts and strong relationships with major computing brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Acer, Google, Lenovo, Microsoft, Asus, etc.
  • Knowledge of AP Style

Salary & Benefits

  • Base salary: $75,000-$100,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)
  • Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Matched and vested 401k plan
  • Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reachout and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
