Senior Director, Engineering - Tech Transformation

What you’ll do:

The Senior Director, Engineering - Technical Transformation is a key leadership role responsible for defining the goals and objectives of our Tech Modernization investments and developing a tech transformation strategy and roadmap in close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Operations, Product, and business leaders.

The Senior Director will report to the CTO and act as a partner to senior leaders across the organization. They will help identify modernization opportunity areas, influence tech investments and direction, develop key metrics for success, track our progress and results, and continuously monitor and improve upon our efforts. We are looking for someone who loves to be at the forefront of new tech innovation, has business acumen, and a bias for action. An organized leader, this person will be able to quickly gain buy-in from stakeholders, identify project milestones and work in close partnership to deliver against those goals, keeping people up to date along the way. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define goals and objectives of Tripadvisor’s Tech Transformation and Modernization efforts. 
  • Partner with Engineering leadership to assess the current tech environment and processes, identify areas of opportunity, and prioritize investments based upon our business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed strategic roadmap for Tech Transformation and Modernization that reflects the strategic direction and release plan. 
  • Identify key metrics, establish a baseline, track progress and results, and continuously monitor the Modernization investments to ensure they are delivering results and providing positive return on investment. 
  • Be in tune with what’s working and what’s not to be able to know when the team needs to pivot and make recommendations quickly when changes need to be made.
  • Manage Tech Transformation-related communication, including milestones, announcements, release notes, migration strategy, and ROI. Generate and deliver comprehensive reports to project teams and senior management, outlining the status and providing KPI updates.
  • Utilize strong leadership, technical acumen, and the ability to navigate complex technology landscapes to help set technical direction from cross-team initiatives. 
  • Be on the forefront of new developments in the innovative technology space. Conduct external research on potential tools or capabilities and how they may be able to impact Tripadvisor’s ecosystem. Provide insights for the Engineering leadership team on where we see opportunities for continual improvement through adoption of modern tools and processes that further increase innovation effectiveness.
  • Play a key role in decisions, support, and execution of the Modernization strategy. In partnership with Engineering leadership, hold teams accountable to milestones and delivery quality.
  • Be a thought leader in advancing engineering excellence and optimizing organizational processes. 

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Experience: Strong technical background with 15+ years of proven experience in planning, executing, and delivering product and platform strategies in complex organizational environments. Experience with technical transformation and modernization investments at scale.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication and presentation skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to all levels of the organization, including non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to deveop technical transformation roadmap aligning technical initiatives with business goals and product strategy. 
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and influence at a senior level, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and drive results in a dynamic environment with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Execution and Delivery:  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail. Ability to facilitate priorities of key stakeholders including executive leadership.
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of cloud technologies, microservice architecture, modernization patterns, and proficient in emerging AI technologies for enhancing developer productivity. 
  • Change Management: Proven experience in driving cultural and organizational change towards a highly efficient SDLC.
