Senior Cryogenics Engineer

This role can be based at can any of the following sites: Culham, Oxfordshire.  

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Senior Cryogenics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design of cryogenic systems for STEP, the UK’s prototype fusion powerplant. You will be responsible for the development of P&IDs and numerical models, heat load analysis and mass flow modelling . You will also be ensuring robust documentation is in place, including technical notes and reports.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Selection of design standards and validating designs against those standards, by computation or experimentation 
  •  Carrying out analysis and validating analysis by others 
  • Ensuring safety requirements are met and working to best practices.
  • Engaging with Industry and the wider cryogenics sector on innovative developments 
  •  Supervising junior engineers or students. 
  • Vendor management, including managing significant contracts. 
  • Engagement with partnering organisations 
  •  Preparing papers for journals and conferences, presenting at seminars and conferences 
  • Other duties that are reasonable and commensurate with this role that may not be specifically referred to in this document 
  • Budget responsibility of up to £250,000 

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent in Cryogenic, Mechanical or Process Engineering or equivalent STEM subject 
  • Significant experience in cryogenics. This experience could be from a laboratory or an industrial setting 
  • Excellent collaboration skills including  written, verbal, and interpersonal communication  
  • A solid understanding of modern standards in Quality Assurance, Safety, Health and the Environment 
  • Demonstrable ability to work and communicate with an multi-disciplinary team 
  • Demonstrable understanding of modern project management tools and methodology 
  • Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties 
  • Experience with relevant environmental factors such as plasmas, vacuum and transient magnetic fields
