About the Role

The App Platform team at The New York Times is looking for a Senior Android Engineer. You will work with our App Architecture & Frameworks workstream (a mobile platform engineering team) to build foundational libraries for satisfying native app experiences that give our readers access to our world class journalism in a medium that is responsive and personal.

You will work on an infrastructure team that supports The New York Times portfolio of apps (News, Games, Cooking, and The Athletic), and collaborate with product engineers focused on each app. You’ll be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.

This is a hybrid role will be based in New York City headquarters.

Responsibilities:

  • Performance Optimization: Identify bottlenecks and improve the performance and responsiveness of our Android applications.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Senior Manager of App Platforms

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years software development experience building native Android applications.
  • Ability to identify improvements in code and process
  • Well versed in design patterns (MVVM), understand the value of Dependency Injection and Dagger/Hilt, and Jetpack Compose
  • Experience working with coroutines, GraphQL APIs, and the engineers who build them.
  • Experience writing unit, integration, UI tests and your own test scripts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with backend engineers and understanding of backend architecture
  • Experience dealing with high traffic distributed systems 

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000$155,000 USD
