What we’re looking for
Argus is seeking a Freight Analyst to join the expanding Freight team in London, which covers tanker, dry bulk and LPG freight markets. As a member of this team, you will become familiar with all these markets and an expert in one or more of them.
You will cover your market through daily price assessments, writing interesting, analytical market commentaries, news coverage and in-depth analysis to appear online and in the daily Argus Freight report. You will also be responsible for maintaining and expanding the contact base, driving methodology and coverage development and attending industry events.
The global freight market is in a state of constant change in its position at the centre of international trade, geopolitics and environmental regulation. This represents an exciting opportunity to join the team and cover high-profile news on changes that can reshape the global trade and impact on the wider crude, oil products, dry bulk and gas commodity industries.
You will work in tandem with other reporters and editors who will provide training and support to develop in-depth knowledge of the markets.
Key Responsibilities
• Monitor and assess markets to produce daily price assessments, market commentaries, news, analysis and reports
• Curate data and maintain and analyse existing data series to inform coverage and develop graphs and charts within Excel to illustrate trends and analysis
• Develop an understanding of relevant commodity markets, working with other Argus teams to produce joint content.
• Regular meetings and daily communication with key members of the industry, including traders, brokers, and business leaders to build relationships and gather news
• Contribute copy to relevant daily and periodical publications and the online news service, and contribute to special content and presentations as required
• Work with other departments to help promote the use of Argus price assessments and help develop new pricing tools for the freight market
• Attend meetings, conferences and industry events to build contacts, report on news and represent Argus in the industry
Skills and Experience
• A graduate with a strong degree
• Proven ability to develop, source and write industry-relevant news to deadline
• Knowledge of the commodity and/or freight sectors useful, but not essential
• Excellent writing, grammar and numeracy skills (these will be tested as part of the interview process)
• Ability to use data in generating stories and analysis is preferred, while a willingness to learn is essential
• Excellent communication skills with ability to network and build contacts with industry executives. Strong presentation skills also preferred.
• Prior experience of working in the financial or energy journalism sector is useful but not essential
• Strong co-ordination and time management skills with the ability to work well within a team
• Additional languages useful but not essential
• Experience in the shipping industry or in a price reporting role is preferred, but not necessary
