Position summary
Flagship Pioneering is initiating an exciting new effort to build state-of-the-art agentic LLM workflows to transform decision-making in the drug development process. We are looking for an LLM Engineer/Sr Engineer who will work hands-on in developing this new platform. You will be architecting and implementing unique LLM-based workflows and will collaborate directly with experts in biology, medicine, and industry from Flagship.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement and evaluate custom LLM-based systems to augment biomedical decision-making processes
• Work closely with internal biotech industry experts to develop and improve model performance
• Develop prototypes into production ready systems and work closely with production and deployment teams
• Report and present findings and developments including status and results clearly and efficiently
• Implement and maintain necessary tools and infrastructure for core LLM-capabilities like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic workflows
• Implement systems to integrate diverse data sources in a scalable and streamlined manner

Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s degree in a computational field (machine learning, computer science, statistics, applied math, neuroscience, computational biology, physics, or similar)
• Strong publication record in ML research, especially in LLM research
• Demonstrated experience leveraging LLMs and vector databases in development environments
• Fluency in Python and standard ML tools and packages and libraries (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, sklearn)
• Experience with version control software (e.g. Git) and AWS cloud computing
• Ability to take initiative and work independently
• Team oriented and collaborative
• Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize & communicate complex information rapidly and effectively

Preferred

• Experience with biomedical research
• Prior industry experience (3+ years)
• Familiarity with the drug development and approval process
