Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is hiring a

Scientist - Biological Cartography (Royer Group)

San Francisco, United States

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

Dr. Loic A. Royer leads an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, optical engineers, and biologists with a shared vision: mapping the emergence of cell types and states during embryonic development. This ambitious goal, exemplified by their recent Multimodal Atlas of Vertebrate Development (Lange et al.), drives the Royer Group to develop cutting-edge technologies. They combine state-of-the-art light-sheet fluorescence microscopy for live, volumetric, and multi-color imaging of zebrafish embryos with advanced image processing and analysis algorithms. This approach enables cell tracking in whole embryos with unprecedented precision and scale (Bragantini et al.). The project's success hinges on seamless collaboration across diverse fields, including transgenic line development, genomics, and more...

We are seeking a Scientist (PhD-level) who will contribute to building a 'Virtual Zebrafish Embryo' by leveraging these cutting-edge technologies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in advancing our understanding of how embryos develop into fully formed organisms by asking fundamental questions and driving interdisciplinary research. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work at the frontier of developmental biology, advanced microscopy, single-cell genomics, and computational methods. You will contribute to expanding the Zebrahub platform and play a pivotal role in our mission to create a comprehensive multimodal atlas of cellular behavior in a developing vertebrate organism.

You will report directly to Loic A. Royer, Director of Imaging AI and Senior Group Leader of Quantitative Cell Science at CZ Biohub, San Francisco.

What You'll Do

  • Design and execution of experiments using advanced light-sheet microscopy, single-cell genomics, and genetic manipulation
  • Develop innovative transgenic lines using the latest genome manipulation technologies and protocols to facilitate imaging
  • Collaborate with computational biologists and computer vision and AI experts on applying novel computational methods to analyze and interpret large-scale imaging and multi-omics datasets
  • Collaborate closely with genomics, bioengineering, and data science platforms to advance the virtual embryo project
  • Contribute to enhancing and disseminating your work and the broader Zebrahub resource, making your findings accessible to the global scientific community
  • Publish high-impact papers and present your work at premier international conferences

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Computational Biology, or a related discipline
  • >5 years of experience in Developmental Biology
  • >4 years of experience in advanced microscopy techniques
  • >3 years of experience with transgenic line development, particularly the latest genetic manipulation technologies like CRISPR
  • >2 years of experience with single-cell genomics protocols and data analysis pipelines
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of the variety of fluorophores and their use in live imaging
  • Computational skills, with experience in analyzing large biological datasets
  • A proven track record of work on interdisciplinary research projects
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A passion for open science and team-oriented research

Nice to have -

  • Experience in light-sheet microscopy
  • Experience with data integration and analysis
  • Experience with image processing and analysis
  • Familiarity with zebrafish as a model system

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network requires all employees, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of their initial COVID-19 vaccination by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.

Compensation

  • Scientist I = $100,000 - $137,500
  • Scientist II = $112,000 - $154,000

New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
