We have an opening for a Science and Technology Administrator within the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Principal Associate Director’s (PAD) Office. You will be a key member of the directorate’s senior management team and provide advanced level support to the Deputy Associate Director (DAD) for Science and Technology (S&T). You will interface with senior-level internal personnel and external contacts to gather, exchange and disseminate information.  You will be initiating, recommending, and implementing internal administrative systems and procedures in support of Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) projects including Office of Science, external engagements and the PLS Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) portfolio and coordinating S&T activities with the PAD Offices, institute leaders and Division Leaders.

You will

  • Plan, execute, and/or provide oversight to a variety of operational and organizational requirements, and activities.
  • Advise on and implement business operational and/or organizational strategies, objectives, Laboratory policies and procedures, deliverables and prepares responses for requests for information; develop methods for successfully meeting deliverables.
  • Represent the PLS Directorate on self-assessment, audit teams, or work-related committees, and lead projects to assess, set and establish protocol and procedures.
  • Manage business operations and administrative staff to include hiring, supervising, mentoring, career development, disciplinary actions, training, performance appraisals, coordinating work assignments, and providing ranking and salary recommendations.
  • Solve complex and sensitive problems, develop, and implement new techniques and procedures, interpret policy, formulate recommendations, and establish procedures.
  • Research, gather, select, and compile information from various sources for reports, proposals, and presentations. Prepare administrative and scientific material including correspondence, documents, tables, charts, and reports.
  • Independently assess and respond to inquiries, prioritize actions, follow-up, and ensure resolution on a wide variety of issues such as scheduling, evaluating, and reporting of the internally reviewed PLS LDRD portfolio.  This also includes responding to Office of Science and other Department of Energy (DOE) Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs),  as well as preparing for townhalls and red team reviews.
  • Facilitate coordination with the PADO office on the internal science investment strategy, manage  quality assurance for and assess the directorate's scientific staff and research products, and coordinate with PLS divisions and staff on external science programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate’s Degree in a business-related field or equivalent combination of significant experience and education in a related business, operational, and/or organizational area.
  • Advanced administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, including detail oriented, flexibility and experience independently coordinating and prioritizing multiple and complex work activities, often with conflicting deadlines.
  • Advanced supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership and team building skills to effectively build and manage administrative personnel who support multidisciplinary groups.
  • Ability to work effectively with short deadlines and frequent interruptions, and anticipate, identify, and resolve complex issues effectively.
  • Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills necessary to handle sensitive and confidential issues with tact, discretion, and mature judgment, and interact with a diverse group of personalities and disciplines at all levels internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Knowledge of the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
