Assesses, develops, coordinates and administers education, competency and orientation programs for the Pulmonary Services Department. Provides Respiratory Care Education for other departments in the Medical Center and in the community.
Core Competencies
- Performs all respiratory care therapeutic modalities for all age ranges served.
- Develops and maintains standards of clinical practice using professional resources, ie: AARC and CSRC, and evidence based best practice.
- Completes an annual education needs assessment.
- Develops an annual education plan for the department based on current trends, problems and issues impacting patient care.
- Plans and develops educational sessions and/or competencies to address these issues.
- Coordinates the educational opportunities offered through the department, provides continuing education both directly and indirectly.
- Develops and implements CEU opportunities, establishes a monthly calendar to meet the needs of the department, and maintains in-service attendance records.
- Develops and coordinates orientation process for all new hires and for current employees who are being cross-trained and/or expanding their roles within the department.
- Monitors the progress of orientees and notifies supervisor of any problems or failure to progress through orientation.
- Ensures completion of all orientation documentation at the end of the orientation period to the shift supervisor.
- Provides Respiratory Care related educational opportunities as needed to other departments when requested.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of new procedures and equipment and makes recommendations to the department leadership.
- Coordinates clinical rotations of Respiratory Care students.
- Reviews and updates policies and procedures as needed and every 3 years, recommends changes in practice in response to evidence based practice, the JC, DHS, and other regulatory bodies.
- Establishes and manages a department educational library of reference materials.
- Observes and follows all Department and Hospital Policy and Procedures as they relate to the position.
- Delivers critical care, routine therapy and diagnostic testing as directed by a physician.
- Provides technical support and education to all clinical staff.
- Communicates with patients and/or family members modifying terminology based on the patient’s age, clinical condition, patient/family communications and/or culture.
