OpenAI is hiring a

Researcher, Economic Impacts

San Francisco, United States
Full-Time

About the Team

OpenAI's mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. We see AGI as a potential source of economic disruption. To align with this mission, we focus on understanding the economic effects of current systems and developing tools to predict the economic impacts of future systems. Planning for AGI's development involves exploring realistic outcomes and creating resilience strategies for humanity's long-term benefit. Concurrently, our Policy Research team adopts a research-first approach in engaging with global stakeholders.

About the Role

This role sits on the Policy Research team and will collaborate across the Strategy Org. You will take a lead role in building forecasts for how AI may impact the world, developing new techniques to measure that impact, and evaluating potential policies to mitigate harmful impacts. This will require a unique blend of experiments, modeling, and collaboration with cross-functional partners.

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Develop forecasts and models to assess the potential economic impacts of advanced AI systems.

  • Design and conduct experiments or pilot studies to empirically test hypotheses about AI’s economic and social impacts, including second-order effects such as job satisfaction, skill development/atrophy, and the changing nature of human relationships.

  • Collaborate with public policy teams to evaluate existing policies and help formulate new proposals aimed at mitigating the negative consequences of AI deployment.

  • Research how factors like deployment speed, order, pricing, and methods can be optimized to ensure AI has a positive impact on humanity, reducing the risk of increasing inequality and concentration of power.

We're looking for a blend of:

  • 5+ years experience in a quantitative role navigating highly ambiguous environments, ideally as a data scientist or research economist

  • Comfort with drawing conclusions from ambiguity – ambiguous asks, ambiguous methods, ambiguous results

  • Proposed, designed, and run rigorous experiments with clear insights utilizing SQL and Python

  • Demonstrated prior experience in some combination of economics research, data science, generative AI evaluation, or economic policy

  • Experience validating quantitative insights with qualitative methods (e.g. surveys)

  • Ph.D. in economics or other social science a plus

  • This role could be a fit for a yearlong sabbatical
