Snapshot

At Google DeepMind, we've built a unique culture and work environment where long-term ambitious research can flourish. The Multi-Agent AGI team investigates multi-agent approaches to research on intelligence and society. We work at the intersection of artificial intelligence with social, evolutionary, and cognitive sciences. We believe there is a virtuous circle in which ideas from artificial intelligence may be applied to advance social sciences while ideas originating in the social sciences may be applied to impact artificial intelligence technology. Our team’s core expertise is in theories of cooperation, and our current focus is on figuring out how this area should evolve now that we live in a world of foundation models, where the agents we simulate can talk to each other in natural language.

About us

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The role

Research Scientists on the Multi-Agent AGI team  lead our efforts both to understand human cognition, culture, and society, and our efforts to construct human-like and human-compatible artificial general intelligence. The team develops solutions to fundamental questions in machine learning, AI, and the intersection of these fields with the social and natural sciences.

We are looking for researchers who thrive in an interdisciplinary environment. Previous experience with multi-agent reinforcement learning, natural language processing, or other parts of machine learning is valued. Keen interest in applying methods from artificial intelligence in the social sciences or evolution is essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, implement and evaluate models, agents and game environments.
  • Report and present research findings and developments clearly and efficiently, both internally and externally.
  • Contribute to team collaborations to meet ambitious research goals.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in machine learning, artificial intelligence or computer science.
  • A proven track record of publications in top-tier conferences.
  • Familiarity with experiment design principles.
  • Experience with deep learning research.
  • Strong coding and communication skills.
  • Research interests in multi-agent modeling of human behavior.
  • Experience with benchmark design or game/environment design.
  • Experience in a modeling paradigm with a multi-agent outlook such as game theory, multi-agent reinforcement learning, or evolutionary theory.

The deadline for applications is Friday 4th October at 5pm BST.
