Research Scientist - Electric Systems Automation

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), the US subsidiary of the corporate research & development (CR&D) organization of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Research Scientist to join the Electric Systems Automation team. Aiming to be a premiere research laboratory and the prime source of technology for Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in our areas of expertise, MERL conducts application-motivated research and development that advances the frontiers of technology and makes lasting impacts on the world. MERL supports and encourages publishing and presenting research results in top international conferences and peer-reviewed journals, collaborating with university professors and students, and maintaining an influential presence in the academic community.

The Electric Systems Automation team conducts fundamental research and development to solve challenging industrial problems and applications related to smart factory and electrification, including, but not limited to, accurate multi-physics modeling, simulation and system co-optimization for rapid customization, fault diagnosis and predictive maintenance of factory equipment for lifecycle management, and optimal & learning control of mechatronic systems for performance & flexibility. We are seeking a candidate who can complement and expand the expertise of our team in the intersection of mathematical modeling, machine learning, optimization, and control.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Conducting original research aiming to advance the state-of-the-art in the fields: electrical machines & drive technology, precision mechatronics, multi-disciplinary system optimization, and optimal & learning control,
  • Publishing results in leading technical journals, conferences, and in patent applications,
  • Partnering with CR&D, business units, and academic groups in the execution of projects,
  • Transferring results and technology to CR&D laboratories, and
  • Drafting project proposals with long-term research goals and leading research projects.

Qualifications for this position are:

  • Ph.D. from an internationally recognized institution in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, or other relevant fields,
  • Strong publication record demonstrating innovative research achievements,
  • Thorough engineering knowledge and strong depth in optimization & control, and
  • Strong teamwork, communication, writing, presentation, and leadership skills.
