Technologies may include precision coating, extrusion, thermal embossing, drying/curing, lamination, and other web-based processes such as printing and label converting. The Research Engineer position will support senior staff through all phases of project execution, from concept design, to scale-up, commercialization, and requires close collaboration with vendors and Avery Dennison plants and personnel globally.
Responsibilities:
Support global projects that require both mechanical design and process understanding.
Develop technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity, as well as focus on fundamentals and quantification.
Design and execute necessary lab experiments in support of design and project objectives.
Work with senior staff with product and process development, from conception, development, prototyping, to implementation.
Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis for various liquid film coating, polymer processing applications, and airflow problems.
Perform structural and heat transfer analysis using finite element modeling.
Utilize and improve legacy numerical simulation codes and help to build new computational capabilities for ET.
Interact with Avery Dennison plants and vendors to ensure that the equipment and processes provided meet all requirements and specifications. Work with Avery sites globally to ensure successful implementation of technology.
Create and maintain SOP & technical documentation.
BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering required, with 3+ years of engineering, research, scientific or related experience. Advanced degrees preferred and can substitute years of experience. Recent graduates willing to take on challenges are encouraged to apply.
Strong fundamentals in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and structural mechanics.
Fundamental knowledge of computational modeling methods such as CFD/ FEA for fluid flow, structural, and heat transfer analyses is also required. Demonstrated proficiency with Numerical Modeling & Simulation best practices and model verification/ validation techniques are highly preferred.
Experience with at least one CFD and/or thermo-structural FEA package from commercial multiphysics software such as ANSYS, SIMULIA, COMSOL, MSC Software, or similar.
Prior experience in mechanical design, prototyping, and hands-on testing, with a working knowledge of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is highly preferred.
