Radiological Field Support Lead

We have an opening for a Radiological Field Support Lead to provide technical guidance, leadership, mentoring, and career development to Integrated Safety Team (IST) Health Physicists (HPs). You will partner with IST Leaders to ensure adequate supervision is provided to IST HPs including anticipating future needs and providing guidance to ensure the radiological aspects of the programs supported by the ISTs meet the needs of LLNL Radiation Protection Program, while incompliance with LLNL policies, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and federal regulations. You will also provide support to the Radiation Safety Programs group to include developing and maintaining radiation safety program procedures and processes. This position is in the Radiation Protection Functional Area (RPFA) within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will 

  • Provide advanced technical leadership, direction, training, mentoring and guidance to IST HPs to ensure high-quality and effective field HP services to the individual missions of programs of LLNL.
  • Perform program management activities including work and resource planning, safe conduct of work, evaluation of program performance and customers’ satisfaction.
  • Perform personnel management activities including supervising professional and technical staff, conducting performance review and salary management, recruiting and hiring new staff, and mentoring staff to promote personnel growth.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and technical basis documents for radiation protection elements to ensure quality, efficiency, productivity, and compliance.
  • Solve complex technical problems with frequent independent decision-making, interacting with customers and stakeholders at all levels to provide resolution or continuous improvement of operations.
  • Participate in the self-evaluation of functional elements of the radiation protection program.
  • Provide emergency response support to on-site and off-site radiological incidents, counsel affected workers and their families, also participating in investigations of radiological exposures and intakes to make recommendations to prevent recurrences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSL.4 level 

  • Maintain the Health Physicist Qualification Program to ensure the RPFA HP staff is well-trained and effective at serving the LLNL mission and that contractual commitments and obligations are met.
  • Serve as liaison between RPFA and the Safety Education and Training Organization to ensure institutional radiological work training and RCT qualifications are adequately maintained.
  • Participate in RPFA management activities and represent RPFA when needed. Contribute to the planning and execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Lead or participate in interdisciplinary teams to realize solutions to complex problems affecting multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics or other relevant technical area, or the equivalent combination of education.
  •  Significant related safety experience and ability to lead teams in tandem with responsibility for complex independent work.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of and experience with one or more of the following: 10 CFR 835, Occupational Radiation Protection; DOE Standard 1098-2008, Radiological Control; and DOE Order 420.2C, Safety of Accelerator Facilities.
  • Experience as a supervisor or team leader with effective leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle highly complex, sensitive, and confidential issues with tact, discretion, and mature judgment.
  • Significant collaborative, innovative experience as both a DOE field HP or the equivalent of an IST Lead exhibiting a high degree of customer service with a variety of health physics-related problems.
  • Experience developing and maintaining radiation safety program procedures and processes.  Experience with program management activities, including work and resource planning, and evaluating program performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Advanced communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain highly complex technical information to all levels of personnel, and to advise management.
  • Analytical and computational skills and experience analyzing complex data from various data sources and proficiency using Microsoft Office products (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook).
  • Effective management and organizational skills with detail orientation necessary to handle multiple highly complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service.

Additional qualifications at the TSL.4 level

  • Substantial experience leading teams of technical and professional personnel and working with colleagues and collaborators outside of the home organization.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge and experience in operational health physics.
  • Expert communication skills and experience explaining complex HP concepts, advising healthcare professionals/emergency responders and reassuring affected workers and management during evolution of radiological incidents.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Health Physics or a closely related field.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
