Radiation Protection Physicist/Engineer (HSE-RP-AS-2024-163-GRAP)

Your responsibilities

Are you an engineer/physicist who wants to be there when CERN starts its two new flagship projects, the Future Circular Collider and the search for hidden particles? Do you have competence in radiation protection? If yes, join the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, namely the Accelerators & Sites section of the HSE Radiation Protection (RP) Group.

We have two jobs to be done:

1) Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment of the Future Circular Collider by evaluating effective doses to members of the public during its operation.

2) Radiological Environmental Impact Assessment of potential fires in the HI-ECN3 facility by using the FIRIA methodology developed at CERN (Fire-Induced Radiological Integrated Assessment).

Key responsibilities:

  • Follow the projects focusing on radiation protection of the public and the environment.
  • Conduct site reconnaissance campaigns and identify population groups potentially hosting representative persons.
  • Calculate doses to members of the public by using available environmental and radiological models.
  • Improve these models as new scientific and technical developments will emerge.
  • Draft and redact reports intended for radiation protection experts at CERN and in CERN's Host States.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Solid knowledge of nuclear and/ or particle physics.
  • Experience in radiological environmental impact assessments or ability to learn the subject quickly.
  • Knowledge of the radioprotection system as recommended by the International Commission for Radiological Protection.
  • C++ and Python, or the capability to learn the other programming language quickly.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams with members from all over the world.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in PhD in Nuclear Engineering/Physics (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • A valid driving licence.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).

  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
