Radiation Effects Engineer

We have an opening for a Radiation Effects Engineer. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser.  It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022, a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.

You will provide engineering solutions for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate and its associated Programs to enable scientific exploration of the frontiers in fusion ignition, national security, astrophysics, materials science, nuclear science, and other scientific disciplines. You will provide expertise and guidance for hardware systems with requirements to operate during and after exposure to the NIF’s high radiation environment. These roles require radiation response testing, modeling, and the use of test data to assess hardware designs against the specifications and requirements. These positions are in the Laser Science Engineering Organization (LSEO), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide advanced technical expertise in radiation survivability, including radiation mitigation tactics such as radiation hardening of electronics and radiation shielding.
  • Provide guidance to various NIF team leads, system owners, and project engineers regarding radiation hardened system design.
  • Perform evaluation and selection of complex, often not well-defined instrumentation for NIF systems.
  • Prepare test plans and reports for radiation testing of electronic components (total dose, prompt dose rate, single event upsets, etc.
  • Lead and/or provide guidance and technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams in a growing, dynamic environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.4 Level

  • Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others, utilizing highly advanced knowledge and skills.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in highly complex designs and analysis.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or related fields, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Current experience as a Radiation Effects Engineer or similar position.
  • Significant experience and knowledge in design and/or analysis of systems that operate in a radiation environment.
  • Advanced understanding of complex electronic and electromechanical components and radiation effects on materials.
  • Ability to devise solutions for unique and complex problems in situations that may not be well defined.
  • Ability and flexibility to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests and in collaboration with a variety multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members.
  • Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present complex concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.

In Addition, at the SES.4 Level

  • Substantial experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems that may be frequently not well defined and leading corrective actions where necessary.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors and proven record of team building and conflict resolution.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or a related field.
  • Familiarity with the use of radiation test facilities (reactors, DT generators, accelerators, high power/energy laser facilities).
  • Experience with radiation transport codes such as MCNP, GEANT4, NOVICE, FASTRAD, SRIM, CASINO, etc.
  • Experience working in an environment with stringent safety and security policies.
