Property and Evidence Technician – Auto Pound

Pay Range: $18.32 - $22.90/hr.

Workdays & Hours: This position will be REQUIRED to work 2nd or 3rd shift, WEEKENDS and HOLIDAYS. Also work outside in inclement weather as needed.

A Property and Evidence Technician – Auto Pound position is available with the the City of Fort Worth Police Department Auto Pound Unit.  This position will primary be responsible for performing a variety of technical duties relative to the receipt, storage, protection, delivery, release and disposition of property or evidence.  The incumbent will also maintain appropriate chain of custody of evidence.  This position will report to a Senior Property & Evidence Specialist.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of property and evidence maintenance or inventory control, Auto Pound or Impound Facility, recording keeping, customer service and cash handling experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Forklift experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Extensive public contact customer service skills.
  • Experience working with property inventory and inspection.
  • Experience working in law enforcement; knowledge of Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedures.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

The Property and Evidence Technician – Auto Pound job responsibilities following:

  • Receive, document, process and store evidence, property and vehicles; assign control numbers and storage locations to property, evidence, and vehicles.
  • Release property and evidence to crime lab, courts, the public or various law enforcements agencies; ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations and chain of custody procedures.
  • Determine the final disposition of property and evidence, including vehicles; prepare appropriate paperwork for disposal; remove property/vehicle from storage location operating a forklift, and prepare for the destroying, donation or auctioning of property and/or vehicles.
  • Answer questions and provide general information to the public regarding Police Department policies and procedures pertaining to the storage and release of property and vehicles.
  • Receives and secures citizen vehicles that have been impounded. Inspects impounded vehicles for damage and identification numbers. Documents pertinent damage information.
  • Operates a computer to determine ownership of vehicle. Enters license plate and VIN information from impounded vehicles.  Researches computer data base to obtain information on stolen vehicles and notifies appropriate unit/agency as required.
  • Calculates impound fees for vehicle releases or wrecker purposes. Receives payments and/or fees for release of vehicles. Balances cash drawer daily.

Working Conditions:

Final candidates selected for hire in the Police Department will be subject to a fingerprint/criminal history background check and polygraph examination.  Applicants must not have used marijuana during the previous two (2) years, nor illegally used any controlled substances within the last ten (10) years.

Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.  Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position:  Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions in the last 10 years, Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication in the last 10 years, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and ALL Family Violence Convictions regardless of class.

Physical Demands:
Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
