The Project Manager (PM) co-leads a focused strategic project of the non-infectious disease (NID) programs department. The PM is responsible for a time-bound project that is conducted in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Bloomberg Philanthropies, donors and other internal and external partners. The PM will bring strong project management skills, interpersonal skills, content area expertise and leadership with an entrepreneurial and mission-driven approach.

The project team has an established collaborative learning environment, MDI Connect, where medicolegal death investigation (MDI) offices, data sharing partners, vendors and FHIR® subject matter experts come together to design, build, and test technical strategies to modernize MDI practices and work towards standards-based data exchange. This work is transforming the MDI data landscape and creating efficiencies for MDI offices to collaborate with data sharing partners. Select MDI offices will also be supported in improving data access, automating data exchange or assuring data quality related to drug overdose mortality data. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in managing and leading complex, fast-paced, public health projects. They may also have experience working with local or county government agencies, MDI offices and/or working in data modernization and/or with overdose mortality data. They may be knowledgeable about organizations in the public health informatics landscape and be savvy about navigating challenges encountered in data integration projects.

Remote candidates will be considered; however, Atlanta-based applicants are preferred. Frequent attendance at in-person team meetings in Atlanta and across the US is required. Relocation expenses are not provided.

Responsibilities

  • Manages initiative(s) focused on medicolegal death investigation (MDI) data modernization.
  • Provide grant management and develop project scopes of work, oversee workplan implementation and procure final deliverables and reports from funded sites.
  • Work collaboratively with CDC and CDC Foundation staff to design and manage the MDI DMI projects. This may include working with CDC Foundation field employees.
  • Leverage prior experience working in or with local/county government agencies at the state, local, or national level to manage the day-to-day activities for the project.
  • May be required to concurrently manage more than one time-bound project to synergize work around a specific subject, practice area, and/or set of partners.
  • Formulate and/or implement project-related goals, objectives, strategies and priorities to ensure consistency with organization, department, and division standard operating procedures.
  • Build partnerships with national and regional organizations, provides leadership that ensures impactful, efficient, and effective project implementation.
  • Promote and increase visibility of MDI Connect at various national and regional conferences/meetings; support MDI offices at various stages of readiness and capacity.
  • Responsible for project planning, implementation, documentation, performance and impact monitoring, reporting, contracting, budgeting and close out.
  • Oversee the work of subcontractors and consultants and ensure activities and deliverables adhere to the timeline and meet or exceed expectations.
  • Design and facilitate program implementation, strategic and operational meetings to advance project goals and represents the CDC Foundation at external meetings.
  • Serves as project liaison for and between internal and external partners to ensure tasks are clear, aligned and coordinated across all parties. External partners may include MDI offices, public health, data sharing partners and information technology vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-directed in a hybrid/remote work environment.
  • Travels as needed to represent the designated project and the CDC Foundation (15-20 percent annually). In-person team meetings may occur in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA or other locations TBD.
  • Participates in and/or leads special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Necessary Skills

  • Master's degree in public health, public or healthcare administration or other related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in project management with experience managing projects that involve multiple entities working collaboratively on a joint project/initiative in their local jurisdiction
  • Experience working with medical examiner/coroner offices strongly preferred.
  • Experience facilitating learning collaboratives or communities of practice for practitioners from different organizations/sectors that have different roles and levels of knowledge/experience.
  • Demonstrated experience across all phases of project management, including initiation, planning, execution, performance monitoring, and project close-out.
  • Experience with resource planning/project management systems used to manage day-to-day activities such as project plans, budgets, and timelines.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Knowledge and skills needed to be effective in the public-private partnership, project, donor, and stakeholder environments.
  • Understanding of electronic data use within public health, including the advantages and challenges associated with common data sources, systems, and work processes a plus.
  • Ability to represent the CDC Foundation and its partners, leading discussions and negotiations concerning project planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Excellent written communication skills with experience preparing, writing, and editing complex documents such as reports to donors and briefing documents for the CDC and other audiences.
  • Creativity, problem-solving, demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with others.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in a clear, positive manner with internal teams, external partners, and non-technical audiences, as appropriate.
  • Ability to engage with, listen to and learn from a broad range of people and organizations.
