BigCommerce is looking for a Product Design Manager to lead our European research and product design team. You’ll foster a collaborative work culture that ensures the delivery of high-quality design solutions and uplevels the BigCommerce user experience. You’re a player / coach, and you will take on the design work for some projects, including payment integrations, design patterns and other projects to support needs where appropriate.
You’ll set design standards, shape design strategy and holistic north star design solutions, ensuring that the experiences we ship fulfill our business goals and user needs while being realistic enough to get out the door.
You’ll set the team up for success through open dialogue, collaboration and mentorship, cultivating a culture of learning, creativity, quality and trust. You’ll advocate for a top notch experience for international use cases and build an understanding of industry trends, competitive products and key user needs and workflows (ie., catalog management, selling products on multiple storefronts, managing inventory and supporting languages for a range of international, multi-brand, B2C and B2B scenarios).
You’ll influence prioritization of research and design projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams including product management, engineering, product marketing to ensure your team is working on projects that make an impact, deliver inspiration and meet the needs of the market.
What you’ll do:
- Solve business objectives, shape design team culture and evolve the design practice.
- Provide guidance during the early phases of project definition, including discovery and ideation to empower the building of useful and usable features.
- Incorporate user-based research practices in the design / development process to ensure our product meets market, user, and design quality-markers.
- Provide feedback and guidance to ensure that designs are consistent with the product vision and design standards.
- Partner with cross functional stakeholders to identify strategy, set vision and improve end to end experiences; develop the artifacts to support execution of this work.
- Analyze ecommerce trends and make recommendations for what we could do to improve our product design strategy
- Be an ambassador of design principles and team values; advocate for user-centered design within the organization and champion design quality and consistency across projects.
- Help shape and evolve BigDesign, our design system library, to ensure solutions are consistent and familiar across the platform.
- Be an active mentor and advocate for design team members, drive effective collaboration, strong performance and guide career growth.
- Advocate for staffing based on team capabilities and needs, then recruit and hire to fill those needs.
- Where needed, create flows, sketches, prototypes, wireframes, and high fidelity mockups to communicate concepts, solicit feedback, and validate solutions.

Skills & Abilities:
- 7+ years of relevant design and UX experience, with a solid understanding of design methods, tools, and processes, with 2+ years experience managing product designers and UX research
- Demonstrated fluency in product design, information architecture, user experience design, agile development and usability research
- Demonstrated execution of end-to-end design process from discovery to delivery, with a portfolio of work showcasing visual design, interaction design and strategic thinking
- Exposure to working on developer facing products or enterprise platforms / applications
- Experience creating thoughtful, scalable design systems
- Highly collaborative, objective and leveled facilitation skills, guide decision making, effectively align teams
- Strong information design experience with a solid foundation in UX design heuristics
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an appropriate field, such as Design or HCI or equivalent experience
- Ability to work with remote teams, with willingness for travel as needed.
