OpenAI is hiring a

Product Design Manager, Platforms

San Francisco, United States
Full-Time

About the Team

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The ChatGPT team works across research, engineering, product, and design to bring OpenAI’s technology to the world. We serve a diverse audience of users who are already using ChatGPT daily in their lives and work.

We seek to learn from deployment and distribute the benefits of AI, while ensuring that this powerful tool is used responsibly and safely. Safety is more important to us than unfettered growth.

About the Role

Design plays a critical role here. To succeed in our mission, it’s crucial that we make our technology intuitive and accessible. We’re hiring a design manager to lead products that are easy to use, beautiful, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. As an early team leader, you’ll have a huge part in shaping our product direction and design culture.

In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with a small team of product designers and cross-functional partners to craft the Platform experiences of today and tomorrow. You’ll lead product designers working on the end-to-end design of new features and improvements across openai developer tools (platform.openai.com), mission critical research tools and more. You’ll help chart our course into the future as we evolve our technology, product, and design paradigms.

This role is based in our San Francisco HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the overall design and support product direction of OpenAI API developer tools, critical research tools and more

  • Manage and inspire a small to medium size team of product designers

  • Build a cohesive design team and culture, growing junior product designers and retaining top talent

  • Ensure high quality work and consistency across the team

  • Partner closely with engineering, product management, AI research, and design peers to define both long-term strategy and short-term tactics

  • Engage in user research to better understand our users and refine our products

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have a history of building and shipping great work in the Developer Tools or complex technical tools spaces

  • Have 5+ years of experience managing teams of 5-10 product designers

  • Are passionate about how Tools products impact user experiences

  • Possess strong skills in visual design, interaction design, and product strategy

  • Have experience working on both mobile and web applications, bonus points for native desktop apps too

  • Have experience working on consumer (i.e. Messenger) and/or prosumer (i.e. Slack) products — ideally both!

  • Possess excellent communication and storytelling skills

  • Have experience leading design on sizable projects, ideally with experience bringing an entirely new product to life

  • Have a demonstrated ability to work closely with engineering, product, and design peers to define, design, ship, and iterate on high-quality products

  • Are a systems thinker–helping develop and evolve our product design language, components, and structure over time.

  • Have experience working with content design and user research

  • Love thinking through complex interaction design problems

  • Enjoy tackling ambiguous problems and shaping them into a clear vision

  • Get excited about shaping how AI-first products should look and behave
