Founded in 1976, Samtec is a privately held, $950 million global manufacturer of a broad line of electronic interconnect solutions, including High-Speed Board-to-Board, High-Speed Cables, Mid-Board and Panel Optics, Precision RF, Flexible Stacking, and Micro/Rugged components and cables. Samtec Technology Centers are dedicated to developing and advancing technologies, strategies and products to optimize both the performance and cost of a system from the bare die to an interface 100 meters away, and all interconnect points in between. With 40+ international locations and products sold in more than 125 different countries, Samtec’s global presence enables its unmatched customer service.
Summary/Objective: The focus of the Cable Process Development Engineer’s work will be to understand and characterize key process variables, develop reliable process windows, improve the overall efficiency of our cable processes, and minimize machine/process variation. The Process Engineer will need to consider using new and various methods to drive long-term process stability/scalability. The Process Engineer will utilize cable prep equipment to develop new products or identify gaps that may exist with current equipment/processes and work to improve.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute structured problem-solving experiments to identify key process variables using DoE, (5W’s) and 8D type methodologies.
- Develop/Implement standard manufacturing best practices, parameters, process windows, and work instructions that improve Samtec’s cable processes.
- Develop/Implement formal testing, qualification, and process validation documentation.
- Develop/Implement in-process measurement and monitoring capabilities to provide process feedback.
- Work with vendors to research and find new technologies that will improve the quality and throughput of new and existing products.
- Use Six Sigma problem-solving methodologies (DMAIC, A3, PDCA) to determine root cause/solutions to process challenges.
- Use statistical methods to conduct process capability studies to determine if process is meeting key requirements.
- Provide general guidance, direction, and support to other engineering and operations teams that improve cable processes.
- Communicate effectively and work with other teams on ensuring new products, processes, and tooling are compatible with downstream processes.
- Lead meetings and presentations that communicate the team’s efforts and progress to stakeholders within Samtec.
- Collect and interpret data from other technical and operating staff involved.
-
Act as the owner/subject matter expert to collect and analyze data that pinpoints and drives process improvement projects.
The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position. Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities.
Required Experience:
- 5+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment performing design/development/manufacturing of complex assemblies.
- Experience launching new products and manufacturing processes into production.
- Solid understanding and application of physics and engineering fundamentals.
- Proven problem solver - demonstrated experience of data-driven root cause analysis.
- Must possess process engineering skills (process development/improvement, troubleshooting, data analysis, constraint analysis, flow optimization, root cause analysis, etc.).
- Experience performing analysis of data in software such as Minitab, Excel, JMP.
- Good understanding of process controls, part variation, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, and cost reduction methodologies.
- Experience with statistical analysis such as Six Sigma/DMAIC methodologies.
- Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
- Experience/background in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Education:
-
Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials, physics, chemistry, or related discipline.
