The Position

OpenTable and KAYAK are looking for a highly organized, motivated and business-oriented Principal Privacy Counsel specialized in global privacy, commercial, and product advising to further our mission of helping everyone experience the world through travel and dining.

As a Principal Privacy Counsel, you will play a crucial role in being a trusted advisor to KAYAK and OpenTable’s cross-functional teams and assisting them roll out innovative travel and dining features and solutions at scale. You will collaborate cross-functionally across Commercial, Marketing, Engineering, and Product teams to operationalize business initiatives with a legal and privacy impact and help define privacy strategy and roadmap. This role will report to our Director, Legal and may be located remotely.

 

Location

This position will be located in the US on the east coast - possible locations include Stamford, CT, New York, NY, Cambridge, MA, or US remote.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Strategically develop, enforce and lead a global privacy program, collaborating with senior partners and cross-functional teams to ensure strategic alignment

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to KAYAK and OpenTable Commercial, Partnerships, Engineering, Product, and Security teams, providing strategic and tactical advice regarding product and privacy laws and global regulations, including but not limited to state and federal consumer and privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CPRA, and FTC)

  • Advise cross-functional teams on the impact of global regulations on our suite of products and assist with roadmap planning and presentation to the KAYAK and OpenTable leadership teams

  • Counsel cross-functional teams on end-to-end product, privacy and regulatory matters, serving as a resident authority on global privacy, data, product design, and information security

  • Identify and address novel product, regulatory, privacy, artificial intelligence and other legal risks and mitigations creatively, and build processes for innovating at scale

  • Advise cross-functional teams and senior members on legal requirements related to security incidents and regulatory inquiries

  • Review, negotiate and draft complex privacy agreements, including integration partnership agreements and/or agreements with an artificial intelligence component

  • Draft public-facing product and privacy disclosures, disclaimers and terms of use

  • Develop and maintain subject-matter expertise in privacy and consumer protection areas that impact the KAYAK and OpenTable products globally

 

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Minimum 8-10 years experience of legal experience with global privacy laws and regulations, with particular emphasis on consumer and marketplace products advising high-growth companies on privacy and product issues in a senior capacity

  • J.D. from a nationally or internationally-recognized law school and has been admitted to the bar, with a license to practice law in at least one US state

  • CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM or equivalent professional certification strongly preferred

  • Prior experience working directly with partners throughout an organization and advising senior leaders on risk mitigation to ensure we take the optimal path

  • Humble and egoless teammate with a sense of levity and humor

  • Exceptional facility with spotting issues, assessing and communicating risks, making common-sense decisions in the face of ambiguity, and finding flexible/creative solutions to achieve business goals

  • Excellent judgment, high integrity, and strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a “can-do” demeanor

  • Exceptional collaboration, partnership and influencing skills with the ability to work in a global environment across multiple locations and time zones

  • Likes working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • Experience working with global teams in multiple locations

There are a variety of factors that go into determining a salary range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required. The range for this remote United States based role is $190,000 - $235,000 USD.

In addition to a competitive base salary, roles are eligible for additional compensation and benefits including: annual cash bonus, equity grant; health benefits; flexible spending account; retirement benefits; life insurance; paid time off (including PTO, paid sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, floating holidays and paid holidays); and parental leave and benefits.
