The Opportunity
The Green Building Technology Access Centre (GBTAC) team is a group of talented, innovative researchers, designers, trades people and engineers keen on partnering with industry to design, develop, implement and commercialize novel green-building technologies and processes. As the principal investigator, you will be responsible for research project and/or program development. This includes planning and executing on funding applications to build capacity specifically in commercial building focused projects and support industry development in the area.
The position requires hands-on application of subject matter expertise in building codes, lifecycle asset management and planning (as it relates to energy retrofit planning), understanding building design and construction in order to work effectively with industry collaborators. A strong knowledge of architectural or mechanical design approaches would be an asset.
This position also involves engagement work such as facilitating a learning session with a multi-disciplinary audience, stakeholder engagement, and an openness to applying a variety of methodologies in project planning and support. This includes our team’s commitment to reconciliation and working closely with Indigenous collaborating partners.
The Role
- Applied Research Project Management and Execution
- Deploy effective communication and stake-holder management skills through tactical meetings, progress reports and status updates with transparency to meet stated deliverables and outcomes.
- Support of SAIT departments and other team members on an ongoing and as needed basis to ensure project execution and completion are appropriately measured for consistency, quality and thoroughness.
- Project management including planning and execution of small and large-scale projects inclusive of workplan development, initiation, monitoring budget and schedule, change and closure.
- Develop, manage and execute database management strategies as they relate to Green Building Technology Access Centre research projects.
- Performance monitoring, technical support and report writing related to Green Building Technology Access Centre research themes
- Ensure compliance with safety and quality management standards of practice.
- Staff supervision and support
- Manage the project work of research assistants, research associates and students/new-grads, provide constructive feedback, and identify opportunities for skills growth.
- Mentor staff members to advance skills and competencies in order to better contribute to project work and find fulfillment through their employment with Green Building Technology Access Centre.
- Support of SAIT departments and other team members on an ongoing and as needed basis to ensure project execution and completion are appropriately measured for consistency, quality and thoroughness.
- Manage industry and government client relationships
- Working with industry, communities, government entities, and associations on business development for projects. This includes attending networking events and building relationships, scoping projects and developing budgets, acting as technical lead and managing scope development of complex and cutting-edge projects, analyzing and reporting on collected information, and presenting results to company leaders and industry-at-large during conferences and in publications.
- Business development and relationship building with external clients, serving as main point of contact.
- Tours of our facilities
- Project exploration and navigating industry through research services or advising on the most appropriate SAIT research group, instructors and equipment.
- Writing, editing and executing proposals and reports including technical reports, white papers, grant funding reports and business development analysis
- Discovery and lead applications and projects through typical funding routes such as NSERC and Alberta Innovates.
- Discovery and lead applications for capacity building of staff and infrastructure. Funding discovery and applications for capacity building will involve gaining significant support from industry and sourcing industry cash contributions and in-kind, and local, national, and international partners.
- Lead and write as necessary final grant reporting and white papers
- Continually track and report to management and funders on important metrics such as number of students involved, number of highly qualified personnel trained, number of company and institutional collaborations and engagements.
- Develop and execute strategy documents with multi stakeholder groups
- Through existing partnerships and networking events, coordinate engagement between partners and other associations or individuals.
- Help guide and engage in industry partners’ strategy through coordinating access to resources such as students, research facilities, and funding.
- Participate in strategy development with Green Building Technology Access Centre management and advisory board members.
Qualifications
- Minimum Required
- Post-secondary education in a related field (architecture or engineering)
- 5 years’ experience in designing, constructing, managing or retrofitting buildings (or equivalent including grad studies)
- Participation in relevant industry organizations as a member at large
- Preferred
- Diploma and or degree from a recognized university or technical institute in architecture or mechanical engineering.
- Commercial building experience preferred
- Registration or professional certification from a relevant industry association/certifying body
- Demonstrated industry network
