Principal Engineer Test Lead

Primary Purpose:

The AV Test Engineering team at Motional plays a critical role in testing Autonomous Vehicle functionality, safety and performance. It is part of your role to test our comprehensive stack of tools comprising the latest technologies in the AV industry. You will be contributing to the testing infrastructure by creating testing frameworks and contributing to existing ones to provide test coverage and confidence to our systems. 

The Principal Engineer Test Lead plays a pivotal role in leading a team of Senior Engineer Team Leads to ensure the efficient and successful operation of Motional’s internal stakeholders. This position demands exceptional leadership, operational acumen, and a commitment to fostering growth and productivity within the team. As a frontline leader, the Principal Engineer Test Lead cultivates robust relationships across diverse teams while collaborating closely with organizational leaders to provide strategic support and guidance.

Essential Duties:

  • Act as a key business partner to the Director of AV Test Engineering, driving alignment with organizational objectives
  • Take ownership of processes, deliverables, and reporting to support OKRs, both technical and non-technical
  • Contribute to strategic planning and goal-setting for various projects and programs
  • Evaluate and provide feedback to direct reports, fostering their professional development and addressing areas for improvement
  • Mentor and coach Senior Engineer Team Leads and Supervisors to enhance their leadership and technical skills
  • Ensure compliance with global process standards across multiple sites and drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Champion a culture of safety, leading by example in promoting safe and efficient operations and ensuring team compliance with training
  • Develop scalable, streamlined processes to meet the evolving needs of the organization
  • Monitor department performance and provide feedback to cross-functional teams to enhance software, system design, and safety processes
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritize testing activities and promote test consolidation and creation
  • Additional duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelors in an engineering discipline or equivalent technical field
  • Minimum 10 years of management experience in AV operations or other sectors of vehicle dynamics testing
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams effectively
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to cross functionally collaborate and problem solve
  • Ability to interpret and stay relevant with a quickly evolving AV stack
  • Experience in technical writing, technical drawings, and documentation 
  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in metrics-based decision-making and data analytics
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with exceptional time management skills
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial management
  • Flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal working hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30%
  • Enthusiasm for the AV industry as well as safety/mobility

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in engineering or equivalent technical field
  • Experience in start-up environment
  • Experience with product launch V&V
  • Basic understanding of robotics systems including sensors, actuators, mechanical and software systems is a plus
  • Hands-on experience in automotive communication protocols like CAN, LIN, Ethernet, FlexRAY

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and at times for long periods; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Travel Requirements (greater than 20%): Expected to travel for 2-3 weeks each quarter visiting all of our testing sites - mostly to Las Vegas, but also domestically as needed for the business.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, road conditions, and pedestrian traffic.  The team member is regularly exposed to mechanical and computer parts. The team member is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles.  The noise level in the environment is low to moderate. When traveling, the team members will be exposed to airports, airplanes, hotels and public transportation environments.

$164,100$200,000 USD
