Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Principal Engineer works closely with project team members: Project Directors, Project Managers, and Engineering Managers. The Principal Engineer’s primary function is to advise and lead our Projects team to apply principles and tools for crafting and building Teck’s assets with a vision for the future and in alignment with Teck’s sustainability approach – focused on operating sustainably, ensuring the health & safety of our people, and working to build positive relationships with communities and Indigenous peoples. Motivated by Teck’s Safety and Sustainability through Design Standard, the scope of this role will span across the full life cycle of Teck’s projects, ensuring that final asset designs support both the responsible mining of the metals and minerals essential for the modern world and the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Guide the project teams in identifying and implementing initiatives which eliminate the introduction of hazards to our community, applying the hierarchy of control to introduce safer and more sustainable solutions
- Champion the implementation of the Safety and Sustainability through Design standard and be a key resource for project teams in sharing standard processes across the portfolio
- Initiate reviews and assessments on project performance related to sustainability and safety in design implementation, define performance measures and identify necessary corrective actions
- Coordinate design review activities including HAZIDs, Plant Layout and Area Classification, Safety Integrity Level Assessments, Hazard Exposure in Design Assessments and HAZOPs as may be required by project scope
- Participate in the management and sponsorship of relationships with technical services providers, specialist contractors and consultants, coordinating sustainability and safety principles between multiple consultants
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field or equivalent and registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia
- 15+ years successful experience in process safety or design safety roles on major infrastructure, mining and/or process plant projects
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the sustainable design of major infrastructure, mining and/or process plants
- Proficiency in hazard identification and mitigation methodologies on the technical scope of engineering design and operation
- Previous project design and site engineering experience
- Project experience as an owner at a major mining company is preferred or, experience as owner's team representative or EPCM contractor for the resource industry
- Training and experience in project management systems and an understanding of multiple phases of project execution
- Able to coordinate work efforts of technical team, including multiple consultants
- Experience crafting and making technical presentations and confirmed talent with report writing
- Outstanding communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people
- Can establish positive rapport with others and is effective in cultivating relationships through openness, integrity and cooperation
