Visa is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead a “Platform-centric initiative”. In this role, you will build and grow a world-class team of data engineers to develop data-related techniques, platforms, systems, and services end to end. You will initiate processes that allow your team and other Data Platform teams to collaborate with local as well as global teams with a high degree of efficiency. You will empower and motivate individuals toward innovation and execution. Your team needs to collaborate with Project Managers, Product Managers, architects, SMEs, and businesspeople across the company on high-impact data-related initiatives. This position is based in Foster City, CA and reports to the Vice President of Data Science Platform in DAP in Foster City.
Essential Functions:
Build, grow, and lead the Data Assets to develop end to end technical solutions while fostering innovation, leveraging new technologies, and strong customer centered service mindset.
Develop strategies and roadmaps to meet business objectives with existing or emerging technologies in your area.
This role requires you to code at least 50% of the time in your preferred coding language.
Apply creative thinking/approach to determine technical solutions including architecture that further business goals and align with corporate technology strategies, keeping in mind performance, reliability, scalability, usability, security, flexibility, and cost.
Instill best practices for software development. Drive for engineering excellence including automation, quality, efficiency, and productivity. Provide technical guidance to the team including architecture, design, and code reviews.
Operational Excellence: monitoring and operation of production services including understanding user experience and ensuring happy customers through collaborating with your product support team

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.
Basic Qualifications:
• 12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 10 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters/MBA /JD/MD), or a minimum of 5 years of work experience with a PhD.
Preferred Qualifications:
• 15 or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 12 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, or MD), PhD with 9+ years of experience
• 15 or more years of hands on software development experience, including architecture design, coding, data processing, data packaging and serving, etc.
• Technical background and a rich experience in data with deep understanding of issues, of large scale, and in the areas of data processing, data quality, data management, data analysis, distributed processing, high availability, statistical, data mining, machine learning, handling batch and streaming data and operational excellence of production systems.
• Proven experience managing the software development of highly available enterprise level applications and platforms utilizing technologies such as Big Data, Hadoop Stack, Java, Spring, JSON, Rest, XML, relational databases, etc. and experience leveraging GenAI capabilities.
Work Hours: Varies upon the needs of the department.
Travel Requirements: This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.

U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is 215,200.00 to 312,350.00 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.
