The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute is a highly successful nonprofit whose mission is to accelerate cures through stem cell research.
NYSCF is seeking to immediately fill a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Diabetes team. The project will focus on differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) into pancreatic beta cell organoids for disease modeling and drug discovery with a major focus on Type 2 diabetes. In addition to the Diabetes team, you will work closely with a broader interdisciplinary team, including members of the Global Stem Cell ArrayTM, project management, biologists, automation engineers, software specialists, and operations.
In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to collaborate directly with the Center for Precision Health Research, NHGRI. You will contribute to the experimental work and write publications resulting from this collaboration.
You are a highly self-motivated applicant with a strong interest in stem cell research. You will have a solid background in human pluripotent stem cell culture, including directed differentiation, and specific experience with differentiation towards the pancreatic lineage. In addition to these interests, the potential to leverage high-throughput liquid handling is at the heart of this role, alongside the opportunity to enable high-throughput large-scale genotype-phenotype association studies that utilize the iPSC disease model.
What you’ll do:
- Perform population-based diabetes disease modeling
- Optimize processes for beta cell differentiation
- Develop high-throughput phenotypic assays for iPSC-derived tissues
- Perform preparation and analysis of samples for immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and ELISA assays
- Perform compound screens to correct diabetes phenotypes in iPSC-derived tissues
- Maintain accurate and complete records and protocols
- Communicate in written and oral form with a multidisciplinary team
- Work with the NYSCF Global Stem Cell ArrayTM team to automate methods for iPSC differentiation
- Oversee and participate in the planning, design, and execution of experiments
- Lead novel assay/process development in emerging areas of interest for future work
- Provide technical support and mentorship to junior scientists
What we’re looking for:
- Recent PhD in Biology, or another relevant field
- Experience with human pluripotent stem cells, including directed differentiation
- Experience with directed differentiation towards the pancreatic lineage is a plus
- Experience with pluripotent stem cell-based disease modeling is a plus
- Experience with automation systems is a plus
- Ability to analyze and interpret data and report findings succinctly
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Adaptability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
- Experience using a LIMS system is a plus
At NYSCF, we believe diversity in all forms makes us a better team, and we celebrate it. Yet studies have shown that women, people of color, and other minoritized individuals in STEM may be less likely to apply to jobs where they do not meet all of the criteria. Therefore, if you are excited about this role but your past experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

It includes a choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403b retirement plan with 2% employer match (immediate vesting schedule which starts after your first 90 days), short and long term insurance, life insurance, inclusive paid parental leave program, pretax transit and parking, legal aid benefits and wellness benefits. Our paid time off includes vacation, sick, personal days, flexible holidays, summer flex program, and all company holidays. If a visa is required, NYSCF will cover all of those costs.
