Physical Digital Human Experience Designer

Burnaby, Canada
Full-Time

We are seeking an innovative and creative Physical-Digital Human Experience Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing integrated physical and digital interactions across a variety of built environments. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including clients, architects, technologists, and developers, to craft user-centered solutions that elevate the overall experience of interior and exterior spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design Strategy & Conceptualization: o Lead the ideation and conceptual design of user-centered experiences that integrate physical and digital touchpoints across built environments. o Develop experience frameworks that enhance human interactions with the environment, considering accessibility, usability, and emotional engagement. o Partner with stakeholders to define user journeys, experience maps, and personas that drive the design process.

• Physical-Digital Integration: o Develop strategies for incorporating technology (e.g., smart devices, IoT, audio-visual solutions, digital-enabled systems, user engagement platforms etc.) into physical spaces, ensuring a cohesive and intuitive user experience. o Collaborate with technical teams to define and implement digital layers, such as immersive audio-visual solutions, mobile apps, smart building systems, AR/VR elements, or interactive kiosks. o Ensure seamless transitions between physical and digital elements to create immersive and engaging experiences for users.

• Visualization & Experience Validation: o Create prototypes, wireframes or visualizations for proposed experiences, using tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD or similar design platforms. o Create immersive visualizations (models and vignettes) for proposed experiences through use of gaming engines such Unreal, Unity and other 3D modeling design tools. o Conduct meetings to gather feedback and iterate on designs, ensuring they meet both functional and emotional KPIs. o Present prototypes and final designs to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders for validation and approval.

• Collaboration, Communication & Visualization: o Work closely with architects, interior designers, UX/UI designers, and technology teams to align vision and implementation. o Collaborate with engineering teams to understand the technical possibilities and limitations of integrating digital systems within physical spaces. o Communicate design concepts and experience strategies to both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.

• Project Management & Execution: o Oversee the execution of human experience designs from concept through installation, ensuring designs are implemented as envisioned. o Contribute to multiple projects simultaneously. o Ensure all designs align with project goals, brand guidelines, and client requirements.

 • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design, Industrial Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Architecture, Interior Design or a related field.

• 5+ years of experience in experience design, with a focus on integrating physical and digital experiences in built environments.

• Proven expertise in UX/UI design, service design, and human-centered design and gamification methodologies.

• Strong knowledge of emerging technologies, including IoT, smart building systems, AR/VR, gaming engines (eg. Unreal) and other digital platforms.

• Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping software.

• Experience with user journey mapping, wireframing, and prototyping.

• Ability to engage in complex projects, collaborate across disciplines, and deliver innovative solutions.

• Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and strategies to both clients and technical teams.

• Knowledge of accessibility standards, human factors, gamification and ergonomics in built environments.

• Familiarity with smart building technologies and connected spaces is a plus. Preferred

Skills:

• Experience in hospitality, retail, corporate, or public space design projects.

• A strong portfolio showcasing work that demonstrates creativity, innovation, and thoughtful user-centered design in the physical-digital space.

• Experience working with clients or stakeholders in large-scale development projects.
