The Strategic Growth (SG) Department is charged with raising mission-aligned funding to support B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada, and where appropriate and aligned, discrete elements of Global Partners work as well. In a time of rapid growth for the B Corp movement, the Strategic Growth team is implementing a multi-year, multimillion dollar fundraising strategy designed to accelerate our fundraising efforts and grow our philanthropic pipeline. At B Lab Global, we use philanthropy to build products, tools, and standards ahead of the market and to support our movement building work (public policy, capacity building, narrative shift, evaluation and research). At B Lab U.S. & Canada, philanthropy is used to support and mobilize the B Corp community and advance three pillars of change: climate justice, racial equity, and stakeholder governance. Philanthropy enables B Lab to keep social impact at the center of our work to catalyze impact in the business world.
The SG team currently raises about $7 million annually (~20% of the consolidated budget for B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada) and we expect this to grow to $10 million/year. Earned revenue, through our certification and verification (C&V) of B Corps, makes up the majority of our income. As the movement grows, we anticipate that philanthropy will be used primarily to support our movement building work and earned income will cover the ongoing costs of verification and impact management. To date, B Lab’s primary sources of philanthropic funding have come from private foundations and individuals closely aligned with B Lab’s mission. We expect this trend to continue, and will prioritize securing unrestricted and loosely restricted funding wherever possible.
The Philanthropic Partnerships (Major Gifts) team is responsible for growing B Lab’s philanthropic revenue from individuals, family foundations, and family offices. We take a relationship-centric approach to fundraising with the goal to build long-term, collaborative, and values-aligned relationships with partners and potential partners. The team is responsible for managing and growing our portfolio of major donors, conducting research to grow the pipeline of prospective partners, and creating meaningful engagement strategies to establish new relationships and deepen existing ones. We work with board members, champions, and other partners to leverage the strength of our existing relationships and networks. The team was established in 2022 when B Lab Global launched a formal major gifts strategy. We are now working to build on this foundation by expanding our efforts to include growing philanthropic support for B Lab U.S. & Canada, a subsidiary of B Lab Global. The team works closely with the Senior Development Officer, U.S. & Canada and other colleagues across our organizations toward implementing a coordinated major gifts program and shaping the future major gifts strategy for B Lab.
The Philanthropic Partnerships Manager will play a key role in helping us grow our philanthropy from individuals and family foundations. This role will be responsible for building and managing a pipeline of prospective major donors, developing cultivation and engagement strategies, and creating donor collateral. They will support the Director, Philanthropic Partnerships in leading and implementing a coordinated major gifts strategy for B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada, and they will work closely with the Senior Development Officer, U.S. & Canada. This includes prospect research, preparation for meetings and events, and grant writing and reporting. In addition to the rest of the SG team, the Manager will work with the U.S. & Canada team, various program teams, the Global Communications team, and the finance team. They should be adept at working collaboratively and asynchronously on a globally distributed and remote-first team. The ideal candidate will be an experienced fundraiser and creative, self-motivated individual who is excited to work in a rapidly growing organization. We are looking for someone who has experience managing a portfolio of donors and prospects, excellent communication skills, and strong attention to detail. They should be solutions-oriented, highly organized, and comfortable taking initiative. This is a great opportunity for someone excited to help our movement grow—and to grow their career right along with us! This position reports to the Director, Philanthropic Partnerships.
