Performance Characterization Test Engineer

The Western Digital System Integration Test (SIT) Lab located in Rochester, MN is seeking an engineer with eight or more years of experience for the position of Performance Characterization Test Engineer. Western Digital’s SIT Lab performs storage, sub system, and device level testing on Western Digital's entire enterprise product line.  The SIT Lab is a highly interactive and dynamic environment where engineers work closely with Development, Customer Technical Support, Marketing, and Customers.

This position will focus on HDD testing and interoperability in a continuously executing test environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position is on a team that does performance analysis of Western Digital storage drives
  • Performance Characterization Test Engineers work closely with development engineering and customer technical support to ensure the quality of the product's design and to verify the product works flawlessly in the customer's systems
  • Performance Characterization Test Engineers are responsible for configuring systems for test, then monitoring and analyzing drive logs, performance data, system logs, bus signals, etc. to determine test status
  • Problems are then isolated, analyzed, and documented as they occur. The engineer may be responsible for developing and maintaining test scripts and automation
  • Responsibilities also include the creation of test schedules, writing detailed performance reports, and communicating written and verbal status

REQUIRED:

  • Qualified candidates will have earned a BS degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science and eight or more years of professional experience including operation of complicated computer systems
  • The candidate shall have the ability to perform detailed failure and performance data analysis and independently investigate system hardware and software issues to determine root cause
  • The candidate is someone who can manage impromptu test scheduling and reallocation of test resources on the fly

SKILLS:

  • Data analysis
  • Windows and UNIX / Linux server storage environments
  • Application-level scripting / programming (Perl / Tcl / Python, etc.)
  • Ability to understand and debug interface protocols (SATA, SAS)
  • Willingness to take on complex problems and investigate
  • Organization and the ability to plan ahead
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Comfortable with speaking about technical topics with customers and or internal entities

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York.  This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will be eligible to participate in Western Digital’s Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan, which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance.  Depending on your role and your performance, you may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
