About the team and position

Join Carvana’s Legal Department in the role of Paralegal, Marketing & Trademarks. Carvana is looking for an experienced and motivated paralegal to serve on Carvana’s Intellectual Property & Marketing Team, a key part of Carvana’s Legal Department, responsible for the efficient and effective management of Carvana’s marketing legal risk and intellectual property portfolio and litigation. As a member of Carvana’s  Intellectual Property & Marketing Team, you’ll assist with managing the marketing review process and providing guidance to the business on all consumer-facing content and other key advertising campaigns, as well as assist with Carvana’s trademark portfolio.

What you’ll be doing

  • Review and provide guidance on marketing materials, advertisements, partnership/influencer campaigns, sweepstakes/contests, other promotional content, and customer communications to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and company policies.
  • Advise on appropriate disclaimers, disclosures, and other legal requirements for marketing campaigns.
  • Draft/review simple agreements related to marketing activities, including liability waivers, influencer contracts, and trademark licenses/permissions.
  • Conduct legal research and provide analysis on various advertising legal issues, as directed by attorneys. Keep the team informed about changes in laws and regulations that may impact marketing strategies and campaigns.
  • Perform and manage phases of trademark applications, including collection of evidence of use, filings, docketing deadlines, assist with responding to office actions, and maintenance work. Communicate with internal and external counsel regarding deadlines.
  • Assist in and manage trademark enforcement activity, as directed by attorneys, including proactively monitoring and researching domains and websites and fielding concerns from the business regarding potential infringement.  
  • Develop an understanding of Carvana business processes and systems and build associated technical understanding related to the automotive and financial services industries. 
  • Lead projects and other deliverables as assigned by IP & Marketing Team leadership, or other Legal leaders.
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication and positive relationships with business partners and Legal Department colleagues to ensure successful outcomes concerning marketing and intellectual property matters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

What you should know/have

The successful Paralegal, Marketing and Trademark is team oriented and highly attentive to detail, focused on customer service, a problem solver and comfortable with ambiguity while managing multiple high-priority projects at once.  This position requires an understanding of Carvana’s organizational goals and an appreciation of how the Intellectual Property/Marketing Team’s efforts can support those goals.  This position requires frequent interaction with Carvana’s business teams and requires clear communication that presents complex information in a concise and easy-to-understand manner.  Once trained, a successful paralegal will be able to work independently with minimal supervision.    

We also look for:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5+ years of experience as a paralegal with advertising laws 
  • Knowledge of federal and state false advertising and deceptive trade practices laws
  • Experience interacting with and working directly with/for internal/external business partners.

We’d be thrilled if you also have: 

  • Experience with trademark portfolio management, CORSEARCH or other IP management tools
  • Experience with the USPTO application and maintenance process
  • In-house experience
