As a Senior Support Administrator you will work as part of a team to supply complete support for all aspects of managed database and application infrastructure operations to a variety of Pythian’s customers.

What will you be doing?

  • Oversee backup, clustering, mirroring, replication, failover, and restoration and recovery of corrupted databases, develop and review action plans (such as maintenance, deployment, upgrades, etc.), and complete all relevant customer documentation. Develop a thorough understanding of all relevant customer information including warnings, handoffs, briefing notes, etc.
  • Coordination, analysis, design, implementation, and administration of database solutions, including database server configuration and maintenance.  
  • Provide initial support to our customers on infrastructure and database issues, troubleshooting, and resolution of problems related to performance issues for database systems. 
  • Respond to customer’s tickets in a timely and efficient manner and escalate issues with urgency when required (aligned to ITIL best practice).
  • Analyze customer’s infrastructure and processes and recommend to customers, best practices for improvements to current operational processes and procedures to ensure that databases remain operational for maximum uptime and recoverability.
  • Administration of backup procedures and disaster recovery plans, provide proactive monitoring to head-off potential issues before they become incidents, respond to monitoring alerts, and carry out troubleshooting of operational problems.
  • Contribute to, improve and maintain team documentation about customer systems and infrastructure, procedures, policies and schedules.
  • Work collaboratively with teammates to contribute to the continuous improvement of our working culture.
  • Mentor and cross-train teammates on technologies and processes, to improve the technical excellence of the team.

What do we need from you?

  • 4 to 6 years of experience in database administration and infrastructure support
  • Database Administration including: managing server and database storage, Installing, configuring and upgrading databases and performance tuning of database server.
  • Designing and implementing various backup/recovery strategies.
  • SSRS & Power BI, SSIS, and BI experience.
  • Coding scripts, procedures, functions, etc.
  • Common Linux distribution platform installation, configuration and performance tuning
  • Windows Server deployment, configuration and performance tuning
  • Active Directory architecture, deployment, migration and group policy management as well as a strong understanding of backup solutions
  • Experience working with at least one major cloud provider. Preferably Google but AWS or Azure would suffice (including infrastructure as code deployment with Cloud Formation, Terraform, Opsworks etc)
  • Ability to describe IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, pros and cons of each, use cases for virtualization and cloud
  • Administration of web servers and supporting technologies, including network load balancers
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation of administrative tasks using bash, python, ruby, go etc.
  • Ability to pick up new technologies quickly
  • Sound grasp of one or more frameworks such as ITIL, Agile, or Lean Six SigmaAbility to pick up new technologies quickly, understand problems and apply knowledge appropriately.
  • Demonstrated experience with writing technical documentation, such as how-to KB articles, runbook, whitepaper or similar items.
