The Open Source Group in Samsung Research leads the company’s activity in open source communities. Samsung’s open source journey started almost two decades ago, and we now have open source embedded in each and every product. IoT, Edge Computing, Cloud, Networking, AI, Kernel, Graphics are some of the current work areas and we keep adding new domains every year. The Open Source Group is headed in Seoul and has 8 different locations around the globe that work collaboratively.

The Open Source Group in Mountain View, CA is seeking a seasoned open source expert with strategy and plan of state-of-the-art techs that can lead, collaborate and represent the company in open source communities. The representative is not limited to open source software but expanded to open standard and open innovation.

Position Summary:

Are you a seasoned software engineer with proven experience working in an open source community? Are you familiar with the open source and open standards strategy? The open source strategist will spend her/his time to search for new opportunities of open source and open standard that are aligned with Samsung’s strategy and business. For instance, Open Source AI, Open Source Security, Open Standardization including related international standard bodies.

Position Responsibilities:  

  • Represent Samsung in open source communities.
  • Explore and analyze Open Source industry trend and derive insights from the trends to create new Open Source business opportunities.
  • Expanding Samsung’s visibility and leadership to open standard and representing Samsung’s requirements and visions.
  • Communicating with the groups in Samsung that work open standardization and product integration to understand trends and new features. Providing strategic feedback to these groups.
  • Develop and execute local strategy aligned with the corporate open source strategy.
  • Closely work and collaborate with Open Source Group in Seoul, Korea.
  • Understand the corporate open source strategy of Samsung and how open source can accelerate the underlying strategy.

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in open source.
  • Proven experience contributing to and working with open source communities. Any Open Source certification and leading position (maintainer/committer) are a plus.
  • Proven track record of Open Source contribution and/or leadership (Tech / Non-Tech).
  • Experience and Knowledge of AI/Cloud/Embedded System technologies is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills. Must be able to communicate with teams and communities around the globe.
  • Self-motivation and proven ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Passion for open source and open standards. 

Special Attributes: 

  • Preferred experience in open source projects as leadership positions such as advisory board, technical steering committee and so on.
  • Experience with Engineering and architecting of open source solutions.
  • Experience with leading of open source projects and execution of open source & standard strategy.
  • Participation in open international Standards Development Organizations, and/or related consortia and alliances.  Familiarity with common standards development processes and procedures.

The base pay range for roles at this level is listed below, but may be higher or lower in other states due to geographic differentials in the labor market. Within the base pay range, individual rates depend on a number of factors—including the role’s function and location as well as the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, education and training. This is part of our comprehensive compensation package with annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits to help you live life well.
Base Pay Range
$200,000$300,050 USD

This position will be performed in an office setting. The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, and frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.
