Nuclear Fuel Cycle Undergraduate Student Intern - Spring 2025

We are looking for an undergraduate level student to engage in practical research to further their educational goals and be part of our Adaptive Computing Environment and Simulations (ACES) team. This internship will be part-time, remote and working on a project related to fuel cycle modeling for the Spring academic year. You will learn to run simulations and develop a user-guide for our simulation tool.  This project requires familiarity with the physics of the nuclear fuel cycle and with the Python programming language.

In this role, you will 

  • Work with scientists, engineers, and technical staff members to provide technical research support to a project in computational nuclear engineering. 
  • Learn to run simulations and visualize the results.
  • Produce a user-guide that teaches others to run the simulation.
  • Attend meetings, participate in research planning and present your results to the team. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or other related fields. 
  • Working knowledge of Python programming language, with the ability to write functional code.
  • Effective written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment. 
  • Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas. 
  • Desire to learn more about the nuclear fuel cycle. 
  • Eagerness to obtain an understanding of new application areas. 
  • Exposure through coursework or relevant experience to the nuclear fuel cycle

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
