News Editor, EMEA (London)

Who You Are:

• We are seeking an experienced photo assignment editor who will help produce our daily photographic coverage across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in collaboration with our regional Director of Photography, fellow editors, and staff and freelance photographers. The role will include regular evening and weekend shifts.

Your Next Challenge:

• Reporting to the EMEA Director of Photography, the news editor will share responsibility for our EMEA news coverage. UK news publishers represent a key market for Getty Images, and familiarity with UK national news is important, but so is experience covering internationally resonant events across EMEA. The News Editor will:
• Research, assign and edit daily news photography across EMEA, in line with coverage priorities set by our director of photography.
• On night and weekend shifts, serve as the News Desk’s key point of contact for photographers on assignment in EMEA, providing editorial direction and responding to breaking news.
• Ensure the quality and efficiency of news content production by guiding photographers in assignment decisions and in meeting our technical and editorial standards. Edit image headlines and captions for accuracy and clarity.
• Coordinate with our editorial picture desk to ensure timely distribution of our pictures to a global market under constant deadlines, and in promoting our best work on Getty Images’ web platforms and social media channels.
• Provide occasional picture editing and post-production support for events where speed to market is paramount and photographers are required to transmit directly from camera.
• Shape our coverage agenda by identifying emergent stories, consulting news planning resources, synthesizing requests and feedback from editorial customers, and voraciously consuming news media across our key markets.
• Conceive and develop in-depth feature stories in concert with our staff and freelance photographers.
• Identify new talent for our roster of freelance and contributing photographers in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

What You'll Need:

• Significant full-time experience in the news picture industry, with a major daily newspaper, news magazine, wire service or photo agency.
• Experience commissioning editorial photo assignments, and familiarity with typical production expenses.
• Technical knowledge of photography and digital imaging; experience with Adobe Photoshop and other industry-standard editing tools and asset management software.
• Proven knowledge of industry style of captioning and IPTC metadata standards.
• Fluent written and spoken English with excellent journalistic writing and copy-editing skills.
• Broad awareness of current affairs, conflicts, political issues and business news within Europe, Middle East and Africa.
• Familiarity with major editorial publications in UK and Europe, their interests and editorial sensibilities.
• A general awareness of established and up-and-coming photojournalists working across the EMEA region, as well as what notable photographic coverage is being produced across this region by our customers and other agencies.
• Willingness to work unusual shift hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
