Municipal Business Development

New York, United States

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

Position Overview: We are looking for an experienced Municipal Business Development leader who will be responsible for building a robust pipeline and closing strategic deals with cities, counties and municipalities to scale Mill’s impact as a key component of their waste infrastructure. You’ll work in deep partnership with our Government Affairs team to expand Mill’s reach and impact nationwide. This role is crucial in integrating our food recycling solutions into municipal services, making sustainability a cornerstone of community operations while driving cost savings and efficiency gains in meaningful ways. The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record of successfully closing commercial deals with government entities, managing the diverse stakeholders and processes those efforts entail, and successfully launching complex projects, preferably in a startup environment

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Development: Identify and pursue new business opportunities with municipal agencies, creating a comprehensive strategy to position our food recycling solutions as essential municipal services.
  • Relationship Management: Together with our Government Affairs team, build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within municipal governments, including decision-makers and operational teams, to foster collaboration and trust.
  • Pipeline Management: Manage and grow a pipeline of opportunities to ensure consistent growth in municipal partnerships.
  • Deal Closure: Lead negotiations and close agreements with municipal agencies, ensuring that deals are mutually beneficial and aligned with our business objectives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Navigate complex stakeholder environments, engaging with diverse groups including environmental agencies, waste management departments, and local governments to secure buy-in and facilitate project launches.
  • Market Analysis: Conduct thorough market research to identify trends, opportunities, and challenges within the municipal waste management sector, leveraging insights to inform business strategies.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, including marketing, product development, and operations, to ensure successful implementation and support for municipal partnerships.
  • Startup Adaptability: Thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating flexibility and creativity in overcoming challenges and capitalizing on opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in private sector business development, sales, or partnerships, with a primary focus on government or municipal counterparties.
  • Proven track record of successfully closing deals with municipal agencies, preferably in the waste management or sustainability sectors.
  • Strong understanding of the waste industry is a plus, with knowledge of food recycling and sustainability practices being highly desirable.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment, with a willingness to learn and adapt as the company grows.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

The annual US salary range for this role is $195k - $245k. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role, which also does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
