The Opportunity

The General Counsel will serve as the senior legal advisor for Movement Labs, managing legal risks, ensuring compliance, and supporting our mission to advance progressive goals. The General Counsel, in addition to being an exceptional generalist, is ideally a seasoned expert in political warfare, with comprehensive knowledge of 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and federal election law. This position demands a risk-neutral approach, balancing legal integrity with the strategic flexibility required for political activism and advocacy. We currently work closely with Jon Berkon at the Elias Group, and plan to continue to do so as needed. 

The General Counsel’s responsibilities will include:

Legal Compliance and Strategy

  • Oversee legal compliance across all Movement Labs programs, campaigns, and digital platforms, focusing on federal, state, and local election laws.
  • Guide the organization on the permissible activities for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, ensuring adherence to IRS regulations while maximizing program impact.
  • Develop strategies to mitigate legal risks in political operations, digital campaigning, and progressive advocacy.
  • Advise on the legal implications of innovative political tactics, including digital organizing, text-based outreach, and social media engagement.

Policy and Advocacy

  • Provide counsel on political and legislative issues impacting Movement Labs, with a particular focus on electoral and campaign finance regulations in battleground states.
  • Potentially engage in proactive legal strategy to advance Movement Labs' agenda to defend democracy. 
  • Monitor legal developments that may affect Movement Labs’ operations, keeping leadership informed and recommending strategic responses.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure the legal feasibility of new initiatives, including programs in voter engagement, political education, and grassroots mobilization.

Risk Management

  • Establish and maintain a risk-neutral approach, balancing legal considerations with Movement Labs’ strategic objectives in political advocacy.
  • Develop frameworks for assessing and managing risks associated with Movement Labs’ high-impact programs, particularly those involving complex compliance requirements in election law and political funding.
  • Conduct legal risk assessments for innovative program ideas, advising on potential legal exposure and crafting mitigation strategies.

Operational Support 

  • Work closely with Movement Labs’ operations and program managers to ensure legal compliance in contracts, partnerships, and external engagements.
  • Provide guidance on intellectual property, data privacy, and regulatory compliance across digital platforms.
  • Support training for staff and partners on legal guidelines relevant to their roles in political advocacy and campaign activities.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school; admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 6+ years of experience in election law, nonprofit law, or a related field, with expertise in political action and advocacy for progressive causes.
  • In-depth knowledge of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations, FEC guidelines, and campaign finance law.
  • Proven experience advising or working within politically active organizations, advocacy groups, or campaigns.
  • Ability to balance legal compliance with an understanding of the urgency and creativity required in high-stakes political work.
  • Strong analytical skills and risk-neutral judgment, able to identify innovative solutions to legal challenges in political contexts.

Preferred Skills:

  • Exposure to mass texting regulations and TCPA
  • Creative litigation experience to advance democracy or progressive causes
  • Experience in digital campaigning, grassroots organizing, or data-driven advocacy.
  • Familiarity with emerging political technologies and platforms, including text-based outreach and social media mobilization.
  • Knowledge of battleground state regulations and other jurisdiction-specific election laws.

Benefits

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $160,000 - $190,000 with a generous benefits package including excellent health, dental, and vision benefits, 401(k) matching, and unlimited Paid Time Off. Movement Labs is open to creative work arrangements that include less than full time.
