We are looking for a manager to lead our Smart Agents team (NPC-AI). This team develops innovative AI models, such as GPT-like transformer architectures to simulate intelligent actors for testing and training AV in Simulation. If you think of Simulation like a video game we want AVs to play and learn from, the Smart Agents team is responsible for developing the intelligence of all the other characters in the game - "Is that pedestrian going to decide to j-walk? Is that vehicle going to cut in front of the AV?" We are looking for someone capable of staying on top of the latest research and leading a high priority ML team core to Cruise's mission.

What you'll be doing:

  • Hire, mentor, and empower exceptional teams of engineers responsible for designing, developing, and supporting products for testing autonomous vehicle software via simulation
  • Collaborate with your teams, product partners, technical leadership, QA, and internal collaborators to plan and implement engineering roadmaps and deliver products on time
  • Continuously and openly track and report your teams’ progress to partner teams, stakeholders, and senior leadership.
  • Work with Cruise technical leadership to set and propagate best-in-class engineering development and management practices within your teams
  • Define and measure the output goals and important metrics your teams will use to measure success
  • Be a culture leader within Cruise, exemplifying our values and maintaining sharp focus on our mission
  • Possess a creative problem solving and continuous improvement attitude which leaves everything you touch better that it was before

What you must have:

  • 8+ years of experience in the field of robotics or latency-sensitive backend services
  • 2+ years of leading a machine learning team.
  • Clear track record of effective collaboration with customers and partners
  • Proven experience in machine learning and classification. Familiar with ML frameworks such as Tensorflow or PyTorch
  • Experience architecting highly performant ML and system pipelines
  • Strong programming skills in modern C++ or Python
  • Ability to design across multiple systems. Ability to both investigate in sophisticated areas as well as a good breadth of understanding of systems outside of your domain.
  • Passionate about self-driving car technology and its impact on the world

Bonus points!

  • Expertise with parallel training, active learning, model deployment (e.g., TensorRT conversion)
  • Track record in deploying perception/prediction/av models into real world environments
  • Experience working with RL and sequence prediction (ML) models
  • Experience with agent behavior simulation
