The opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Metrology Engineer on Magic Leap's Hardware Engineering team, will work with the Advanced Nanofab and Materials Research and Development group to produce innovative products with market leading quality and optical performance. This position is based in Austin, TX.

What you'll do
  • Perform SEM analysis to determine nano-feature geometry and conduct statistical analysis to draw conclusions on critical dimensions, duty cycle, side wall angle, and nano-scale defects.
  • Utilize EDX and uXRF techniques to understand material compositions and develop/update training for SEM, EDX, and uXRF.
  • Enhance SEM methodologies to facilitate rapid material and process iteration and oversee tool maintenance via vendor service contracts.
  • Collaborate with process engineers to identify and address defect modes, generating detailed reports on metrology findings for internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong judgment in critical observation, problem-solving, and proactive decision-making within a fast-paced environment.
  • Work in a clean-room laboratory environment as needed
  • Conduct AFM measurements on wafers and grating structures.
  • Perform optical defect inspection on wafers post-lithographic processes.
The experience you bring
  • 3 years experience in metrology or optical engineering.
  • B.S. in materials science or engineering, chemistry, applied physics or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in SEM.
  • Proficiency in EDX, uXRF and AFM a plus.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively work as a member of a team. 
  • Must be articulate and capable of producing reports and presentations that concisely address the matters assigned.
  • Working knowledge of any of the following is a plus: Matlab, Python, JMP, Gwyddion.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
US Base Salary Range
$83,600$111,400 USD
