Introduction
As a Mechanical Engineer in CERN's Engineering Department, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in the whole lifecycle of mechanical fabrication of components for CERN's particle accelerators. Come test yourself against a diverse range of technologies, serving as the link between physics and mechanical fabrication.
You will join:
The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which provides specific engineering solutions for CERN, combining mechanical design, fabrication facilities, and material science support.
In particular, the Machining & Maintenance section (MA), which masters a wide range of machining technologies through dedicated in-house fabrication facilities. MA section provides a CERN-wide service in the machining and mechanical assembly of devices for particle accelerator applications, while maintaining and developing a corresponding 40 years old know-how. You will join a team of highly qualified technicians and engineers in CNC machining. Perform tasks in a highly technical content, involving state-of-the-art machining equipment.
Functions
As a Fabrication and Maintenance Mechanical Engineer, you will provide engineering support for:
- Maintenance management
- for manufacturing equipment such as for machining, EDM, shaping, welding, heat treatments, vacuum brazing, surface finishing, NDT, etc.
- Provide technical advice and estimates for machine and software maintenance.
- Manage technical tendering for procurement of machining centres and related systems, including drafting of technical specifications and management of related supply contracts.
Programming and use of CNC machine centres
- Production and supervision of CAM programming, for complex multi-axis machining. Ensure Maintenance of diverse types of CAM software.
- Create and maintain postprocessors for milling and turning.
Manufacturing of mechanical parts
- Conceive special tooling for machining and fabrication in general. Follow up of production and procurement thereof.
- Assume direct responsibility for the technical coordination of CERN internal fabrication projects.
- Identify and justify investments in new tooling, fixtures, or equipment and implement into fabrication process.
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering with specific emphasis on Industrial Machining or a related field.
Experience:
as Mechanical Engineer:
- Extensive experience in fabrication (machining and maintenance) in a professional context including CAM and Postprocessor programming, tool conception and fabrication project management thereof (from design to prototyping and manufacturing).
- Demonstrated experience in software and hardware maintenance engineering.
- Demonstrated experience in programming for fabrication of parts in the domain of cryogenics, radiofrequency, magnets or similar equipment.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting technical drawings.
Technical competencies:
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: in particular ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO dimensioning and tolerancing; knowledge of CAD tools, preferably CATIATM.
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts: design and construction of tools and fabrications strategies for components, involving high precision tolerances. Familiarity with non-metallic and metallic materials, such as titanium, aluminium, copper alloys, niobium and stainless steels.
- Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres: proven experience in CAM programming for postprocessors, as well as in data analysis and post-programming tools. Familiarity with CNC control systems, with a preference for SIEMENS, FANUC, and HEIDENHAIN.
- Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems: maintenance of machine tools hardware and related CAM software.
Behavioural competencies:
- Solving Problems: addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components. Finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available.
- Working in Teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals. Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
- Demonstrating Accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions. Working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises.
- Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English: Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in English. Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage
