Devens, United States
Full-Time
About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Mechanical Engineering Manager - Port Plugs

Your focus, as the Mechanical Engineering Manager - Port Plugs, will be on managing schedule, resources, budget, and status reporting for the ongoing design and analysis of the SPARC port plug and casking components, then tracking the manufacturing and pre-assembly of the port plugs and later the development and manufacture of the casking systems used to extract and insert the port plugs. The Mechanical Engineering Manager - Port Plugs acts as part of an integrated Vessel Structures team that includes vacuum vessel and in-vessel hardware, cryostat and in-cryostat hardware, and it is part of a broader Tokamak Systems design team.

As the SPARC project progresses, the Mechanical Engineering Manager - Port Plugs will also work closely with the ARC team to implement knowledge gained in design, fabrication, and installation of SPARC components.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and manage a budget and schedule to ensure the SPARC Port Plugs’ activities are completed on time and on budget and that Casking is ready for use after early SPARC campaigns
  • Coordinate the work of the team to ensure the design, analysis, procurement, manufacturing and assembly is achieved on time and on budget
  • Ensure emerging interface conflicts with others are addressed timely
  • Ensure integration of diagnostic and other tenants’ components as well as shielding
  • Work with Procurement to establish a manufacturing, vendor oversight, acceptance criteria and testing plans
  • Supervise a team of engineers and contractors as needed

What we’re looking for:

  • A Bachelor level education in mechanical (or similar) engineering
  • 8 years experience in a related technical context
  • Experience designing and analyzing components for ultra high vacuum
  • Experience developing designs for conductive materials in an environment with very fast changing electro-magnetic fields
  • Experience with design (ideally NX) and analysis (ideally ANSYS) tools
  • The ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Attention to detail with an ability to pivot between topics multiple times per day
  • The ability to understand and manage interface issues that bridge complex engineering and physics topics

Bonus points:

  • Knowledge of the design, analysis and installation of components in a ultra high vacuum environment
  • Worked under a formal program for quality assurance and quality control

Essential Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid

At CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges.
