We are currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join us and help deliver a project in the West Midlands.

The successful candidate will work alongside a small but growing team of experienced Engineers in new product development and industrialisation. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the product can be successfully manufactured and assembled, ensure the product is safe, and satisfy the design’s key performance indicators as defined by the customer. The successful candidate will likely have a strong understanding of mechanical engineering and DFM/DFA principles as well as taking designs from low-volume (’00) to high-volume (‘0000) manufacture.

The day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Mechanical engineering design of battery cells, module and packs.
  • Review and/or creation of engineering drawings to BS/ISO8888 and co-ordination of cross-departmental review.
  • Using departmental processes and procedures to manage the release and change of technical documentation and data.
  • Mathematical calculations (hand and software based).
  • Creation of data sheets, product specifications and define technical processes.
  • Design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA) evaluations, for battery cells, modules and packs.
  • Occasionally reviewing and/or conducting basic simulations (thermal, structural, modal, CFD).
  • Leading and supporting design reviews with other Stakeholders.
  • Creation of product structuring, part numbering and BOMs.
  • Supporting product validation and testing and the creation of engineering reports.
  • Supporting the creation of DFMEAs and PFMEAs by providing technical input.
  • Reviewing manufacturing and test data to support re-design or issue resolution activity.
  • Providing engineering support to manufacturing teams to ensure product design specification is achieved.
  • Working with the Procurement, other departments and external suppliers to evaluate new technologies in cell components, materials and manufacturing methods as well as any outsourcing activity in realising in-house designs.
  • Leading and delivery of work packages within customer projects as an when required.
  • Being the single point of contact in understanding the status of project technical delivery, communicating these to customers and the wider business and coordinating cross-functional team alignment.
  • Writing technical reports covering the activities listed above when required, using available literature and data, either for internal use or for Customers.
  • Presenting at design review meetings and design gates to a various audiences, such as the customer, departmental peers, technical specialists, Heads of Department and Senior Executive team.

Essential:

  • Mechanical engineering degree at Masters level (MSc, MEng or equivalent) with a minimum 2:1 award.
  • Demonstrated strong fundamental knowledge of engineering materials and first principles such as heat transfer, thermodynamics, stress analysis.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, BS/ISO8888, ISO9001.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD systems (PTC Creo preferred)
  • Working knowledge of PLM systems (PTC Windchill preferred)
  • Competent at performing engineering hand-calculations.
  • First-hand experience of working with/alongside manufacturing operations in a continuous process of automated assembly environment.

Desirable:

  • First-hand experience working on battery cells, modules or packs.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards (eg. IEC62133, UN38.3 etc…)
  • Awareness of functional safety standards (eg. ISO26262, ISO13849 etc…)
  • Understanding of hazards associated with HV electrical systems and appropriate working practices.
  • Experience working on safety critical products in regulated industries.
  • Hands on experience of using Matlab, Minitab, ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL or equivalent tools.
  • Membership of a Professional body (IMechE or equivalent).
  • 18-24 months fixed-term contract
  • Location: West Midlands
