We are looking to hire a Mechanical Engineer (m/f/d) to  join our team as we develop hardware for ion-trap quantum computing. Passionate about helping create technologies which can change the world? What You’ll Accomplish  

  • Design, build and test vacuum systems for ion trap quantum devices.  
  • Design, build and test thermal control systems for ion trap quantum devices.  
  • Optimise designs for mechanical and thermal stability.  
  • Integrate mechanical designs with laser systems and electronics designs.  
  • Work with a multidisciplinary and experienced team of Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Physicists and Quantum Engineers.  
  • Help in the planning and scheduling of projects, reporting progress and issues.  
  • Engage with project planning activities, risk management and scheduling requirements. 

Requirements

  1. Experience in mechanical design, particularly design of thermal management systems. 
  2. Experience in the engineering design lifecycle from initial concept to detailed design through to manufacture and testing.  
  3. Ability to work independently (individual contributor/sub-system lead) and work collaboratively across a multi-functional team  

Must-have Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience working in a competitive engineering environment.  
  • Significant experience in the design of mechanical systems including vacuum systems and/or thermal management systems.  
  • Proficient in 3D CAD/CAE (e.g. SolidWorks) 
  • Experience in stress/strain analysis and mechanical structural design 
  • Experience in vibrational/resonance modelling  
  • Experience in thermal/mechanical test methods  
  • Understanding of material science and the limitations it imposes on vacuum systems.  
  • Experience working with suppliers and contractors  
  • Fluent German and English language skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Team Player  
  • An undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. 

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Experience in thermal/mechanical FEA (e.g. Ansys) 
  • Experience in the design and build of cryogenic systems  
  • Experience in fatigue and creep analysis  
  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques 
  • Experience using SolidWorks and Ansys or other similar software packages
