Mechanical Engineer II/ Senior Mechanical Engineer I – Mission Formulation

Based out of Rocket Lab's global headquarters in Long Beach, CA, the Mechanical Engineer II/ Senior Mechanical Engineer I– Mission Formulation is responsible for developing high-performance launch vehicle systems in support of the Launch Systems Business Development and Strategy team.  

The Mechanical Engineer II/ Senior Mechanical Engineer I is an integral part of Rocket Lab’s Global Launch Services (GLS) Mission Formulation Team which works closely with other Engineering teams and Production to bring new launch and mission concepts to life. This team is also responsible for the formulation and implementation of classified missions on HASTE and Electron launch vehicles and play a key role in developing future missions for Electron and Neutron. Given the high launch cadence of Electron and pace of Neutron development, you will have unparalleled opportunities for end-to-end hardware development and seeing your designs reach space.

(Please note: this position can be hired at the Mechanical Engineer II or Senior Mechanical Engineer I level)

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

  • Primary mechanical engineering contact to Business Development for proposal and mission concepts
  • Take full ownership of the development, detailed design, modelling, and structural analyses of Electron and Neutron unique payload accommodations including processing, vehicle integration, and launch site
  • Conduct structural design trade studies that balance performance margins, resource use, risk, cost, and schedule
  • Work closely with design and systems engineers to define requirements, iterate through design concepts, and demonstrate overall system performance.
  • Document the proposed Vehicle Design solution and participating in design reviews with the customer
  • Participate in program execution of Electron and Neutron system commissioning and calibration
  • Collaborate with internal manufacturing team to support build and integration of hardware, as well as the development of internal processes
  • Liaise with Program, Engineering, and Customer teams on structural design, performance, and test issues and support other teams/disciplines as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS YOU'LL BRING AS MECHANICAL ENGINEER II:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or other technical discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Experience with CAD software such as NX, Fibersim, Solidworks, CATIA, etc.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD US Government Secret security clearance

 QUALIFICATIONS YOU'LL BRING AS SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER I:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or other technical discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Experience with CAD software such as NX, Fibersim, Solidworks, CATIA, etc.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD US Government Secret security clearance

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Master’s or PhD in engineering (Aerospace/Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering)
  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience developing full design solutions for significant structural and mechanical systems in orbital launch vehicle or missile systems
  • Experience with Teamcenter or other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system
  • Fundamental knowledge of structures strength, stability, and fatigue failure mechanisms
  • Experience performing finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T
  • Prior experience in product lifecycle, inclusive of detailed structural design, analysis, build, integration, and testing of aerospace structures
  • Experience in design and manufacturing of composite and metallic structures
  • Experience with planning, execution, and data analysis of structural testing for launch and space mission applications

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.   
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing.  
  • Must be physically able to commute to buildings 
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise. 

Level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base Pay Range (CA Only)
$105,000$160,000 USD
