Materials and Process Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY 

This role will support the conception and maturation of a variety of quantum products, including the development and testing of specialized processes: glass substrate processing, glass and dissimilar material bonding, silicon wafer processing and testing, thin film characterization, laser processing and electrical integration.  The materials engineer’s role will include a combination of self-directed and collaborative efforts with a team of physicists, engineers, technicians, and business personnel. 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

The duties and responsibilities outlined below include essential functions of the role. Depending on business needs, this role may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.   

  • Develop materials bonding and fabrication techniques for construction of vacuum cells, vapor cells, and quantum components 
  • Collaborate with physicists and optical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to define mechanical and optomechanical system requirements 
  • Produce engineering documentation, including technical drawings, mechanical assembly packages, work instructions and standard operating procedures 
  • Support root cause analysis or failure mode investigations 
  • Validate processes through design of experiments, hands-on testing and statistical analysis 
  • Other duties or projects as assigned 

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science or materials engineering, engineering physics, or similar  
  • At least two (2) years of experience in an industry or academic environment working on materials processing, product design, product development and testing 
  • Experienced with adhesive/epoxy selection and testing, ideally for low outgassing applications 
  • Experienced with some microscale and/or nanoscale processing (e.g., MEMS design and testing, wet bench etching, cleaning, and processing) 
  • Experienced with several materials characterization and elemental analysis techniques including high resolution microscopy, SEM, EDS, XPS, SIMS, XRD and X-ray CT scanning 
  • Experienced with laser systems and laser safety, and ideally optics and opto-mechanics 
  • Experienced with vacuum processing and UHV systems, designing and troubleshooting them (including helium leak checking or bomb testing) 
  • Proficient with physical vapor deposition technologies, including ion beam and/or magnetron sputtering  
  • Proficient with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and/or multi-physics modeling (e.g., COMSOL) 
  • Proficient with DOE/SPC/CIP techniques and software such as JMP and/or MiniTab  
  • Proficient with Solidworks or similar 3D CAD software, including drawing tolerancing (GD&T) 
  • Proficient in MS Office and SharePoint  
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively share information with technical and non-technical staff 
  • Good collaboration skills, able to work in a team environment where engagement and participation are an expected part of successful job performance. 
  • This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). TRAVEL 

Up to 5% travel may be required. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  

Work will normally be performed in an office environment.  Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person).  Will involve sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 25 pounds.  

Benefits

The targeted salary range for this role is $90,000 to $115,000 on an annualized basis plus eligibility to participate in our annual incentive plan.
