Manager - Strategy & Planning [Groceries]

About the Team

Careem Grocery is on a mission to reinvent the way people shop for grocery, pharmacy and retail products. As an exciting new vertical within Careem (a startup within a startup), we’re in the early stages of building our product and scaling across the region. We have plenty of interesting and fundamental challenges to solve in order to achieve our ambitious growth goals in this burgeoning space.

About the Role

The team is looking for a self-starting, enthusiastic and passionate individual who can partner with the Head of Strategy & Planning, Groceries to define the future of Grocery delivery in the MENA region. It is a high visibility role that requires  a strong toolkit in strategy development, presentational rigour and  stakeholder management to drive outcomes and push our thinking to new levels. This role reports into the Head of Strategy and Planning for Groceries.

Strategy development:
Support the development of comprehensive, data-driven strategic plans. Identify emerging trends and opportunities, converting them into structured plans for execution.Stay apprised of local and global industry and macro trends and actively adjust our trajectory to account for them. 

Governance: 
Build and maintain an understanding of business performance, including developing OKRs, reporting and projections, identify the underlying drivers and socialise them with the org, and work with leadership in building plans to course correct.

Business planning:
Support delivery of  half-yearly and annual planning cycles (strategic, financial, people), collaborating with VP Groceries, Finance Director and cross functional teams to align their objectives with the strategic plan. Convert plans into goals/KPIs to be closely managed across the half/year.

Program Management:
Lead work streams and projects independently in cross-functional settings. Mitigate risks and obstacles to ensure project success.

Analytics and insights:
Work closely with the data  & analytics team to uncover strategic insights that help shape future plans, projects, etc. and aid regular decision making. Communicate  insights into concise and well presented manner to be used in leadership forums.

Develop Relationships:
Foster strong relationships with markets and functional teams to ensure efficient and productive working relationships, as well as ensuring understanding of their individual contexts and needs to collate and consider in our strategy and plans

What you'll need

The ideal candidate would be someone who has 4-7 years of work experience in strategy, analytics and project/program management roles (experience in a high-growth tech startup and/ or a top-tier consulting environment highly desirable). Additional qualifications and skill sets include:

  • Strong problem solving and analytical ability, ideally with experience in a  consulting or strategy firm
  • Must be able to build and deliver structured and compelling narrative including presentation material
  • Self-starter - the ability to self-serve, investigate and source the data and inputs required to develop strategic content
  • Sophisticated analytical capabilities, including knowledge of statistics. Bonus points for technical ability in SQL.
  • Exceptional communication skills with a spike on executive communication, strong stakeholder manager that can hold others accountable
  • Strong commercial and business acumen (in e Commerce, or early stage fin-tech is a bonus)
  • Hustler attitude, you have to drive consensus and align teams towards our commons targets 
  • Grittiness. You never hesitate to roll up your sleeves and address something hands-on, you persevere when others fall away
