As a Manager, Public Markets Middle Office, you will support the public investment teams with advanced transaction management, asset servicing, investment accounting, reporting and valuations. You will also oversee the day-to-day evaluation, accounting, and monitoring of relevant investment portfolios, covering all asset classes and security types. You will also support/enable priorities to target state.
The Middle Office, Trade Capture & Support teams are accountable for ensuring all bilateral based strategies are executed in an effective and efficient manner, from trade booking to maturity/settlement. The group is cross-asset and provides support for a range of products including but not limited to variance swaps, total return swaps, options, credit default swaps, interest rate swaps and securities lending/borrowing.
Accountabilities:
- Lead talent & performance management for a team of high performing individuals including individual and team objective setting.
- Provide leadership and guidance in the day-to-day management of advanced investment operations functions; ensuring accuracy of trade tickets and accounting entries, completeness of supporting documentation, validation of transaction amounts and ensuring appropriate authorizations are in place in order to facilitate investment closings and start of day trading.
- Partner with colleagues from the Investment Departments, Finance, Legal, and Risk to assist in investment closings through documentation review, system setups, transaction entries and settlements.
- Lead the processing of complex investments with the ability to understand impact on accounting, reporting and performance.
- Lead the review of financial statements, note disclosures and management reports to ensure accuracy and completeness, as well as provide valuable insights and commentary.
- Lead the quarterly/monthly valuation review; ensure valuation adjustments are accurately recorded and bring any errors/ inconsistencies to management’s attention. Provide insightful valuation analysis.
- Maintain an ongoing effective working relationship with internal investment staff and external asset managers to ensure issues are discussed and resolved and financial controls and reporting requirements are met.
- Lead daily validation and reconciliation of recordkeeping for delivery.
- Build a reputation as a subject matter expert in the investments domain for issues related to investment operations and accounting.
- Represent the team and/or lead various initiatives, both firm-wide & team-specific, including system upgrades/implementations, new product & activity onboarding, and ad-hoc management requests.
- Compile & maintain a useful suite of metrics/KPIs to track operational trends, identify efficiency opportunities, and drive continuous improvement.
- Continually strive for operational excellence; seek ways to streamline processes, while creating and enabling operational efficiencies.
- Maintain an ongoing effective working relationship with internal investment staff and external asset managers to ensure issues are discussed and resolved, financial controls and reporting requirements are met.
- Undergraduate degree or college diploma in related field.
- 6+ years of relevant experience, preferably within Middle Office and/or trade lifecycle management, with direct experience in trade capture, enrichment, and support of OTC/bilateral products considered an asset.
- Professional designations such as a CBV, CFA, CPA are considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, financial and management accounting skills will be necessary to perform this role.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfortable learning new systems.
- Experience with investment systems such as Murex, Simcorp, Bloomberg AIM, Equilend, or Traiana. Familiarity with SQL, VBA, or Python for process automation and data analysis is an asset.
- Able to synthesize larger amounts of complex information, clarify and evaluate significance and provide value add insights in investment analysis, reporting systems and computer applications.
- Ability to identify potential cross-functional gaps or risks and proposes effective solutions along with appropriate governance and controls to mitigate the identified risks.
- Ability to understand issues relevant to the broad organization and the businesses strategic goals.
- Proven ability to structure both written and verbal communication to effectively raise and resolve issues across all levels of the organization.
