Manager of Engineering

Reporting to the Director, Projects, the Manager of Engineering is responsible for leading a team of technical specialists in the stewardship of the engineering scopes in the Project Development Group (PDG) projects portfolio and delivering project solutions that bring the greatest value to the business. This includes establishing an organizational structure for the group as well as defining the roles and responsibilities with associated career development plans.

This role will be based in stunning Vancouver, B.C. with site-based assignments across Teck's global operations based on ongoing business needs. 

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Progress the Engineering Safety in Design initiative to include design and construction strategies which promote sustainability, inclusion, and diversity while measurably reducing hazards to people and the environment 
  • Identify, define, and retain adequate resources for supporting implementation of the Social, Environmental, and Regulatory Approvals (SERA) aspects through coordination of permitting activities to achieve timely approvals of Teck Projects 
  • Provide alignment, coordination, and guidance to the technical specialists involved in Engineering, Engineering Management, and pre-Commissioning
  • Develop resource plans to ensure staffing requirements are met and perform resource management activities including recruiting, project assignment, performance management, and career development planning 
  • Guide the development of project execution strategies and plans that improve value and minimize risk to the PDG project portfolio
  • Establish systems to provide quality assurance across service providers’ work and activities including execution plans, HAZOPs, risk registers, quality management systems, and technical reports 
  • Participate in the management and sponsorship of relationships with technical services providers, specialist contractors and consultants. 
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and value creation by modelling and encouraging a growth mindset; document and incorporate learning moments to optimize processes and procedures 
  • Work with the Teck Project Development Framework (TPDF) group to ensure that engineering and construction expertise are provided to support stage gating and independent peer review processes
  • Identify strengths, critical issues, and areas of risks/exposure in the execution of projects and ensure they are documented; Ensure that risks are mitigated pursuant to TPDF guidelines 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably with a focus in Construction Management or equivalent 
  • A broad range of owner and contractor experience across the resource industry 
  • Eligible for registration or registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC); Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration 
  • A post-graduate qualification in project management or business is an asset 
  • The ability to travel outside of Canada is required
